After 80 mm of rain, Municipality reinforces cleaning of drainage channels in PG

The cleaning of streams in Ponta Grossa was intensified by the City Council in the face of the period of instability and warnings for new storms in the municipality. On Thursday alone, Defesa Civil weather stations recorded more than 80 millimeters of rain in the city, increasing attention to points considered most vulnerable.

The services are coordinated by the Municipal Secretariat of Meio Ambiente and have as a priority places considered critical and previously identified by the technical teams.

In the last two weeks, within Operation El Niño, 16 points received clean-up, clear-up and waste removal actions.

Actions to improve water flow

According to the City Council, the interventions are part of a preventive strategy to improve water flow conditions and reduce possible impacts related to large rainfall volumes.

The works cover places inserted in the basins of Olarias, Lajeado, Rio Ronda and Pilão de Pedra.

Among the points recently served are stretches of the streets Marcelino Dias, Maria Noel Silva, Leonel Berger, Expeditionary Adam Buss, David Tozetto, Rebita, Baltazar Lisboa, Arapoti, Switzerland, Itambacará and Raimundo Correia.

There were also services in areas of the new connection of Avenida Anita Garibaldi and in sections of Rua Guabijeiro, in the vicinity of the streets Orlando Estela and Leucena, in addition to other places considered priority.

Ponta Grossa already had 82 shares in 2026

Throughout 2026, the City Council counts 82 stream cleaning actions in Ponta Grossa.

Of this total, 62 services occurred from registered processes or demands. Another 20 interventions were carried out directly by the Municipal Secretariat of Meio Ambiente after monitoring the teams and identifying places that needed maintenance.

The intention is to act before the occurrence of more intense rainfall, especially in regions where waste, vegetation or other materials can compromise the flow of water.

Up to 16 tons of waste at a single point

In addition to cleaning vegetation and clearing watercourses, one of the problems encountered by the teams is the irregular disposal of waste in streams and shores.

In certain locations, a single intervention can remove the equivalent of 800 bags with approximately 20 kilograms of waste each.

The volume represents about 16 tons of materials taken from a single point.

The municipal secretary of Meio Ambiente, Carla Kristki, reinforces that the work has been intensified in the face of weather conditions.

"The teams act continuously and, especially in this period, we intensify the attention to the points that have already been identified as the most sensitive. It is a work of prevention that begins before the rain," he says.

The Secretary also draws attention to the participation of the population in prevention.

“Any waste discarded irregularly can end up in a stream, obstruct the passage of water and increase the problems just in the moments of most intense rain,” he adds.

City Hall alert against irregular disposal

The guidance is that residents do not dispose of garbage, debris, furniture, remains of works or other materials in streams, valley floors, land or public roads.

In addition to environmental impacts, these wastes can be carried by water during storms and form obstruction points.

According to Carla, the monitoring of critical points takes place permanently."When the rain arrives, the prevention work must already be done. Therefore, our teams act in advance, following the critical points, doing the cleaning and removing materials that could compromise the flow of water.

The cleaning of streams in Ponta Grossa is part of the prevention actions carried out by the Municipality during periods of greater instability, especially when there is a forecast of large volumes of rain.
