The result of the presidential elections in Brazil still continues to mess with business. In addition, it is also on the radar of the financial market, the new interest decision of the Estados Unidos, scheduled for tomorrow. The election in Israel and oil prices are also on the radar.
On Monday (26), the Brazilian financial market had a day of strong turbulence, after the re-election of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the second round of the presidential elections.
The dollar closed up 8.21%, at R$ 5,403. Ibovespa, the main index of the Brazilian Stock Exchange, fell 13.88% and reached 176.608.23 points. During the morning, the stock market triggered the circuit breaker mechanism, which temporarily interrupts trades in the face of sharp falls.
The main numbers of the day:
Dollar: R$ 5,403 (+8,21%);
Maximum dollar: R$ 5,6049 during the morning;
Ibovespa: 176.608.23 points (-13.88%);
Minimum of Ibovespa: 169.516.43 points, retreat above 17%.
Dollar in October: accumulated high of 4.40%.
Ibovespa in October: cumulative fall of 5.22%.
Ibovespa in 2026: cumulative valuation of 9.61%.
The dollar has a historic surge
The commercial dollar closed the session up 8.21%, quoted at R$ 5,403. It was the highest daily percentage valuation of the American currency since January 13, 1999, a period marked by changes in the Brazilian exchange rate regime.
During the morning, the currency reached R$ 5,605, exceeding the R$ 5,60 mark. Throughout the day, however, it lost strength and retreated to the range of R$ 5.40, in a movement of profits (sale of money to pocket gains) and inflow of resources from exporters who took advantage of the hike to internalize foreign exchange.
The election result changed the positions that investors had set up before the vote. Part of the market expected the victory of Flávio Bolsonaro, who had led the first round, and had to adjust their strategies after the confirmation of Lula’s re-election.
The National Treasury also acted in the market through the repurchase of public bonds. Despite the daily surge, the U.S. currency still accumulated a 1.57% drop in 2026.
Stock Market Records Strong Fall
Ibovespa closed down 13.88%, at 176.608.23 points, at the lowest level of closing since August 31. The result represented the largest daily fall since March 2020, a period marked by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the morning, the index fell more than 17%, reaching 169,516.43 points. The intensity of the fall led to the activation of the circuit breaker, a mechanism used by the exchange to temporarily interrupt trades in times of strong devaluation.
The financial volume moved in the market was R$ 88.6 billion, well above the daily average of approximately R$ 25 billion.
With the result of the session, Ibovespa eliminated the gains accumulated in October and began to record a drop of 5.22% in the month. In the cumulative period of 2026, the index maintained an appreciation of 9.61%.
