After losing movements in a jiu-jitsu fight in Paraná, athlete gets discharge
Willian "Kabuto" Hiroyuki Masuda is at home, but continues treatment and receives visits only from family
Jiu-Jitsu wrestler Willian “Kabuto” Hiroyuki Masuda spoke for the first time since suffering a cervical spine injury during a competition in Londrina, north of Paraná. The black belt was discharged from the hospital and is at home, where treatment continues through home hospitalization.

In a video posted on social media, Willian thanked for the support he received and explained that he still needs time to recover. "Thank you for following. Thank you for your prayers and see you next time,” he said. According to the report, he remains in isolation because of health care and receives visits only from family members.
The injury occurred on August 22, during a match of the Super Pro Jiu-Jitsu competition, played in the no-gi mode, without kimono. Willian fractured the C5 and C6 vertebrae and was left without leg movements. He was admitted to the Evangelical Hospital of Londrina.
According to information released on the athlete’s profile, Willian is already able to move his forearms, but still does not control his wrists and hands. It also has no sensitivity in other parts of the body below the chest. The full diagnosis was not disclosed. A neurosurgeon on his team said the recovery will be long.
Police investigate the circumstances of the injury
Civil police are investigating what happened during the fight. The case came to the authorities after a crime report presented by the prosecutor Renato de Lima Castro, who requested the investigation of possible bodily injury of a very serious nature.
By September 22, police had heard five witnesses. According to the update released at the time, all said that they considered illegal the blow that caused the injury. The conclusion, however, depends on the other steps, including the testimonies of the athletes involved.
Willian's opponent in the fight was Juliano Di Pelli Machado. His defense informed the G1 that the athlete was shaken, followed Willian’s recovery and made himself available to the authorities. The lawyers advocate that the images, the rules of competition and the performance of the arbitration be examined in the investigation.

The organization of Super Pro Jiu-Jitsu stated, in a note, that Willian received medical attention on the spot and that it follows the situation with the family.
