The debate between Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro, held last night, marked the first direct confrontation between the presidential candidates in the second round. Promoted by the Band, the meeting gathered charges on the governments of the two political groups and attacks involving family members of the presidential candidates.

One of the most prominent answers came from President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), when asked by Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL) about votes of people arrested. Other moments involved criticism of the candidates’ experience and an admission of health flaws during the Jair Bolsonaro government.

“I want you to vote 100%, even your father”

The phrase was said by Lula after Flavio claimed that 73% of the inmates would have voted for the petista. The candidate of the PL did not present the source of the percentage at that time.

Lula replied that he wanted to receive all the votes of this electorate and included the opponent's father in the provocation: "I want you to vote 100%, even your father." The reference to Jair Bolsonaro sparked a new reaction from Flavio, who claimed the former president could not vote and claimed persecution against him.

“Brazil will retire you”

Flavius also resorted to phrases addressed directly to the adversary. In defending the alternation in command of the country, the senator declared: “Brazil will retire you.”

The speech summarized the speech of change adopted by the candidate of the PL during the confrontation. The senator also questioned the results of the petista gestures and charged explanations about suspicions involving people close to the president.

“Bus by Literature”

Lula, in turn, attacked the relationship of the adversary with the reality of workers and users of public transport.

“He knows buses by literature,” the president said. The petista then extended his criticism to Flavio's knowledge of the world of work. The statements were part of Lula’s attempt to question the senator’s experience with the difficulties faced by the population.

“I do this mea culpa”

In the discussion on health, Flavio recognized problems in the management of the father during the Covid-19 pandemic. “Health was not an area where we had the best result, I do this mea culpa,” he said.

The senator argued that the pandemic represented a new situation and defended the performance of the Bolsonaro government in the purchase of vaccines. Lula criticized the management of the health crisis.

Family members and investigations at the center of the confrontation

In addition to the phrases of effect, the debate had charges on the relations of Flávio with Daniel Vorcaro and questions of the senator about Lulinha, son of the president. Lula said his son made bank and telephone information available for investigation.

The charges were brought by the candidates themselves during the fight and should be differentiated from the conclusions of the authorities responsible for the investigations. The meeting also opened space for discussions on cost of living, public safety and health services.
