Castro launches technology investment package, with smart traffic lights and new apps

The city of Castro announced an investment package of more than R$ 2 million in new technologies for the municipality. The actions have already been implemented and others are expected to enter into operation by the end of December this year. Among the new features are smart traffic lights and new applications.

According to the municipal secretary of Science, Technology and Innovation, Marcos Barbosa, the investments contemplate several areas. In urban mobility, highlight the intelligent traffic lights. In education, virtual reality software will be available in all schools of the municipal network, by the determination of the mayor Dr. Reinaldo. The 153, 156 and Smart Castro apps are also part of the package.

All three apps are now available for download in the Apple Store and Google Play Store.

The 153 Citizen app integrates the population with the Municipal Guard. In addition to the phone, the citizen can activate the Guard through the app. In 60 to 90 days, the application will gain a social function linked to the Maria da Penha Law. The woman in a situation of vulnerability will be able to activate an emergency button directly from her mobile phone, without having to make a call. "We imagine that with this we can save some lives," said the secretary.

The application 156: Today the municipality already has a car with artificial intelligence that collects 35 indexes, such as hole in the street, erased pedestrian lane and burned lamp. When the car does not identify the problem, the population can open a call by 156, which will be directed automatically to the secretariat responsible.

Smart Castro brings together services from several secretariats, with a focus on tourism. The tourist or resident who downloads the app will have access to all the sights of the city, with information about location, public and history of the place.

Smart traffic lights

In the first phase, four conventional traffic lights will be replaced by smart models. The places are: Rua do Morro (Rua Dr. Jorge Xavier da Silva), a region of great flow in the lunch hours and 18h; near the Hotel Buganville, in the direction of the neighborhood-center; near the Clube de Campo; and at the corner of Rua Romário Martins, in the center.

The traffic lights have cameras with artificial intelligence that control the flow of vehicles and adjust the opening time according to the movement of the road.

Motivation

According to Marcos Barbosa, technology and innovation are one of the front lines of the management of the mayor Dr. Reinaldo since he took over in 2025, when the Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation was created, in addition to laws and the Municipal Council of Science, Technology and Innovation.

Apps are already in first version and will receive updates every 15 or 30 days. At the beginning of 2027, the IAPO - Artificial Intelligence named after the Iapó River - which is already in use in the internal management of the city hall and was launched during Inovatec 42 should be integrated into the apps.
