Chances of tornado in the region? Ponta Grossa under risk of storm

The weather forecast lit up a warning signal on the Campos Gerais on Wednesday (9). With the approach of low pressure systems and the formation of a new cold front, Ponta Grossa and municipalities in the region may face a sequence of storms in the coming days. The National Meteorological Institute (Inmet) lists the Paraná among the states with the greatest potential for storms on Wednesday (9) and Thursday (10), with the possibility of heavy rain, electric shocks, wind gusts and hailfall.

For Ponta Grossa, weather warnings gain intensity. This Wednesday, there is a yellow warning for storms. For Thursday (10), the data from the Inmet indicate even red storm warning, classification of great danger, with the possibility of rain more than 60 millimeters per hour or more than 100 millimeters in the day, hail and winds that can exceed 100 km / h.

Despite the concern caused by the weather scenario, there is so far no specific official alert indicating the occurrence of tornadoes in the Campos Gerais. It should be noted that in the Paraná the most extensive weather warnings can be issued 12 hours to up to 3 days in advance, indicating that a certain region will have conditions for severe storms. Inmet is currently offering warnings with a horizon of up to five days.

Is there a risk of a tornado?

It is important to differentiate conditions favorable to severe storms from a specific tornado forecast. Meteorologists explain that tornadoes are extremely localized phenomena and cannot be accurately predicted several days in advance. What is possible to identify previously is an atmospheric environment conducive to the formation of strong storms, which can eventually produce extreme phenomena.

According to MetSul meteorologist Estael Sias, factors such as heat, humidity, low pressure areas and changes in wind direction and speed can favor organized storms. This does not mean that a tornado will necessarily occur in a certain city.

Caution is even greater in the Campos Gerais because the region has recorded recent episodes of the phenomenon, including the tornado that struck the rural area of Piraí do Sul in August.

Friday demands attention.

Simepar’s forecast shows a sequence of rainy days in Ponta Grossa. On Wednesday, the probability of rain reaches 98%. By Thursday, the cumulative forecast is approximately 35 millimeters. The greatest attention, however, appears for Friday (11). Simepar predicts about 36 millimeters of rainfall and gusts that can reach 83 km/h in Ponta Grossa.

A new cold front associated with the formation of an extratropical cyclone in southern Brazil is also expected to reinforce instability at the end of the week.

Given this scenario, the guidance is to keep up to date alerts from Defesa Civil, Simepar and Inmet. During storms, the population should avoid open areas, trees, metal structures and sites subject to flooding. In emergency situations, the Defesa Civil can be triggered by 199 and the Fire Department by 193.
