Criciúma City Hall suspends game against Operário after heavy rains

The City of Criciúma, in Santa Catarina, decreed an emergency situation on Monday (21) due to the heavy rains that hit the municipality. The measure also affects the confrontation between Criciúma and Operário Ferroviário, scheduled for 19:30, at the Heriberto Hülse Stadium, for the 29th round of the Brazilian Championship Series B. Mayor Vagner Espíndola announced the suspension of events in the city for the next 24 hours, including the departure tonight.

In a statement, the mayor informed that the decision was taken in the face of floods and overflowing rivers that cut the municipality. In addition to the decree of emergency situation, the municipal administration has determined the prohibition of events that gather people for a period of 24 hours, with the possibility of extension.

Despite the announcement by the City Council, the officialization of the postponement of the match and the definition of a new date depend on the positioning of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).

Mayor announces suspension of Criciúma x Operário

During the speech, Vagner Espíndola explained that the intense rain caused several disturbances in Criciúma since the early hours of Monday.

According to him, the Criciúma and Sangão rivers are among the water courses that have exceeded normal levels, causing flooding in different points of the city.

"We have just signed the emergency decree here in our city. The volume of rain since the early hours of today has been very intense,” said the mayor.

Espíndola also announced the signing of another decree, which prevents the holding of events with crowds of people during the next 24 hours.

The determination includes the match between Criciúma and Operário Ferroviário.

"We have also signed another decree that prohibits that, in the city of Criciúma, for the next 24 hours, being able to be extended, no event be held that brings together people, and among them, of course, the game of Criciúma, which would be tonight," he said.

The mayor also informed that he has already spoken with the president of Criciúma, Pedro Paulo Canella, and with members of the board of the club in Santa Catarina about the decision.

According to Espíndola, the suspension will also allow security forces professionals who would be mobilized for the game to remain available to serve the population affected by the rains.

Worker awaits official confirmation of CBF

Despite the municipal determination, the Operário Ferroviário is still waiting for an official communication from the Brazilian Football Confederation on the postponement of the match.

In contact with BnT Online, the club's advisory office informed that it monitors the situation in Criciúma and maintains contact with representatives of the Santa Catarina team.

According to the information passed on to the portal, the City Hall needs to formalize the decision by means of a decree, which must be forwarded to the CBF for analysis.

The entity will be responsible for defining the procedures related to the departure, including the possibility of holding the confrontation on Tuesday (22) or another date.

Only after this definition will the clubs receive the official communication of the entity.

The board of Criciúma is also waiting for the necessary procedures to formalize the postponement with the entities responsible for the competition.

Heavy rains cause flooding in Criciúma

The emergency situation was announced after the municipality recorded a high volume of rain, causing flooding and flooding in different regions.

The mayor stressed that the decision to suspend the events seeks to ensure the availability of security teams and attendance to the population.

The announced ban will have an initial duration of 24 hours, but may be extended depending on the weather conditions and the situation of the municipality.

The region also faces conditions of instability, with rain forecasts for the coming days, according to weather information provided by the Defesa Civil of Criciúma.

When will Criciúma x Operário be held?

The confrontation between Criciúma and Operário was initially scheduled for 19:30 this Monday (21), at the Heriberto Hülse Stadium, in Criciúma.

The match is valid for the 29th round of the Serie B of the Brazilian Championship and represents another commitment of the Phantom in the national dispute.

With the suspension of events determined by the City Hall, the performance of the game at the originally scheduled time was compromised.

Until the moment of the information passed on to BnT Online, the clubs were waiting for the officialization of the postponement by the CBF, which should also communicate the new date and time of the confrontation.
