Cyclone in Paraná increases risk of storms and strong winds in Ponta Grossa

The cyclone on Paraná increases the risk of heavy storms on Tuesday, including on Ponta Grossa and Campos Gerais. The forecast indicates the possibility of heavy rain, electric shocks, hail and gusts of wind, while other regions of the state may record winds close to 100 km/h.

The instability is associated with the formation of an extratropical cyclone between Rio Grande do Sul and Uruguay and the advance of a cold front across southern Brazil. According to the Paraná Environmental Technology and Monitoring System (Simepar), atmospheric conditions favor the formation of storms in different areas of the state.

Ponta Grossa can have rain and gusts of wind

At Ponta Grossa, the forecast of Simepar for this Tuesday points to a high probability of rain. The weather data also indicate gusts of wind that can reach approximately 58 km/h in the municipality.

By Wednesday (30), the scenario remains unstable in the city. The available forecast again points to a high probability of rain and gusts that can reach about 68 km/h.

Although the forecasted values specifically for Ponta Grossa are lower at this time, other regions of Paraná are at risk of more severe storms, with gusts that can approach 100 km/h, in addition to the possibility of hail and heavy rain.

Cyclone and cold front favor storms

According to Simepar, a cold front has started changing the weather on Paraná since Monday (28), with forecasts of higher intensity of the storms on Tuesday. The body also follows a new cold front planned for the coming days.

The combination of heat, humidity and low pressure systems creates favorable conditions for the development of storm cores, which can occur locally. For this reason, the same region can experience heavy rain and wind while nearby municipalities face less intense conditions.

The Paraná has already recorded recent episodes of severe wind. On 21 September, for example, the Simepar station in Apucarana recorded a gust of 124.9 km/h, while Telêmaco Borba recorded 95.4 km/h during the passage of another cold front.

Care during storms

In case of a storm, the recommendation is to avoid staying in open areas or near trees, poles and structures that may fall. Drivers should also redouble their attention in situations of heavy rain, especially when there is reduced visibility or water accumulation on the roads.

The population should follow the weather alerts and directions of the Defesa Civil throughout the day, as the intensity and location of the storms can change rapidly.
