Deadline for reforms and cleanups in Castro's cemeteries continues until August 28

The Municipality of Castro published Decree No. 736/2026, which sets the deadline for services of cleaning, reform, construction and painting of tombs in the municipal cemeteries Frei Mathias, in the Center, and Nossa Senhora do Rosário, in the Village Rio Branco. The work can only be done until 6 pm on October 28, a Wednesday, imperatively. The measure applies in respect of the Day of the Dead, celebrated on November 2.

Between October 29 and November 2, only burial services are released. The decree also stipulates that the owners and those responsible for the tombs must collect the remains of building materials and debris, such as gallons of paint, wood and cardboard, under penalty of a fine, in addition to the costs of removal.

Expectations of visitors

According to Wilson Ribas, head of the Department of Cemeteries, the expectation is more than 10,000 people in the cemeteries during the period of Finados, depending on the weather conditions. On November 2, there will also be Mass at 10 a.m. in the cemeteries of Frei Mathias and Nossa Senhora of the Rosary.

Care of families

Responsibility for the maintenance of the deposits rests with the families. Today, about 250 tombs are abandoned in municipal cemeteries. Wilson says that many relatives of tombs in this condition have appeared to make reforms, but the number varies, as new deposits become abandoned over time.

“We call on families to work together so that renovations, paintings and heavy cleanings are done as soon as possible,” Wilson said. He also asks for attention to dengue fever: "We count on the collaboration of everyone in conservation and cleaning, and we ask that no vessels with water be placed."

Improvements in cemeteries

Castro has 21 municipal cemeteries, two in the urban area and 19 in the interior. The City Hall has been doing improvements in several of them, largely through accreditation with companies that provide repair services.

In the Nossa Senhora of the Rosary, the services included renovation and painting of the mortuary chapel, installation of internal water network for the cleaning of the tombs, construction of collective tombs, LED internal lighting network and internet at the administrative headquarters.

In Frei Mathias, were made reform and painting with texture on the walls, internal wall of containment, access ramps, reform and painting of the administrative headquarters and the entrance, painting of the poles and installation of internal lighting network. The internet network has improved communication with employees, and water network and internal drainage works are underway.

The cemetery of Abapan received reform and painting of the front walls, reform of the mortuary chapel, internal water network for cleaning of the tombs, repairs on the internal sidewalks, placement of stony stones between the tombs and the construction of a new cruise.

In Socavão, services similar to those of Abapan were performed, in addition to the construction of collective tombs. The site also received earthworks and the closure of an area with precast wall, prepared for the future expansion of the cemetery. The cemeteries of Guabiroba and Ribeira also received improvements.
