The El Niño on Ponta Grossa may influence the behavior of rainfall in the coming months, given the forecast of strengthening of the phenomenon until the end of 2026. Historically, the warming of the waters of the Equatorial Pacific Ocean favors above-average rainfall in southern Brazil, especially during the spring, according to information from the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet).

The scenario places the distribution of rainfall between the attention points for Ponta Grossa and the Campos Gerais. However, the regional trend does not allow to state how much rain will rain in the city or anticipate dates of storms or possible floods.

What NOAA is planning for the coming months

In the bulletin released on Oct. 8, the NOAA Center for Climate Forecasting, the U.S. agency for ocean and atmospheric monitoring, reported that the El Niño continues to intensify. The probability of the phenomenon remaining between strong and very strong until the quarter of January to March 2027 exceeds 83%.

The analysis indicates continuity of the strengthening until the end of 2026. Although intense episodes increase the possibility of effects associated with El Niño, the agency points out that these impacts are not guaranteed in all regions.

How Ponta Grossa can be affected

Being in the South of Brazil, Ponta Grossa is inserted in a region where El Niño usually favors higher rainfall volume. Epagri/Ciram explains that this behavior can affect the entire region or only part of it, with most evident influence in the spring.

For the Campos Gerais, this historical relationship represents a possibility of more rainy periods. This is, however, an interpretation of the regional standard, and not a specific forecast of accumulated for each municipality.

Inmet puts Ponta Grossa on orange alert due to storm risk on Sunday

The phenomenon also does not act alone. The passage of cold fronts and other atmospheric conditions interferes with the occurrence and distribution of precipitation. Therefore, an intense El Niño does not mean continuous rain or daily storms in Ponta Grossa.

Weather forecast does not replace local warnings

The weather forecast shows trends for periods of months. Short-term weather reports allow us to assess when an instability can affect a given city.

Thus, the NOAA data should not be interpreted as a storm warning for Ponta Grossa. To monitor the conditions in the city and in the neighboring municipalities, the population can consult the updates of Simepar, Inmet and Defesa Civil.

Understand the phenomenon

The El Niño involves the abnormal warming of surface waters of the Equatorial Pacific and changes in atmospheric circulation. This interaction modifies rainfall and temperature patterns in different parts of the planet, with effects that vary depending on the region and the time of year.
