Entities criticize Flávio for remarks on environmental obstacles

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro stated in Marabá (PA) that he will end 'environmental obstacles' for rural producers. Entities such as ISA and Greenpeace criticized the remarks, associating them with the government's environmental flexibility discourse.

Environmentalists on Tuesday criticized a statement by Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the PL's presidential candidate, about ending what he called "environmental barriers" to allow producers to do "what they want" on their land. The speech took place during a campaign event in Marabá, Pará, on Monday (19), and negatively impacted among organizations that work in the defense of meio ambiente.

Flávio has fulfilled commitments in the states of Pará and Amazonas, where he seeks to expand the votes in relation to the first round. At the event with supporters, he promised to carry out the largest land regularization in the history of Pará and ensure that the rural producer can exploit the land without restrictions.

Statement in Marabá generates immediate reaction

"I will make the largest land regularization that Pará has ever seen and your land will be your person on paper. We will respect private property. You will be able to plant, raise cattle, do whatever you want on your land, and what you explore on the land is yours. These obstacles that exist, environmental, and mainly because of ideological reasons, we will end,” said Flavio at the event.

The speech was interpreted by environmentalists as a nod to the easing of environmental protection rules, especially in the Amazon. For the Socio-Environmental Institute (ISA), Flávio Bolsonaro reproduced "the latest speech" about the region, treating it as an area in which there can be deforestation to make it possible to increase agricultural production.

Environmentalists defy 'barriers' and cite rights

In the same vein, the coordinator of Zero Deforestation of Greenpeace Brazil, Cristiane Mazzetti, states that the meio ambiente should not be treated as an "ideological" or "opportunist" issue, because preservation involves the whole society. “Environmental protections are not ‘barriers’. What the candidate Flávio Bolsonaro sees as ‘obstruction’ is, in practice, the guarantee of the right to the ecologically balanced meio ambiente for present and future generations [...] and the protection against irreversible damage to the climate, biodiversity and nature.

The statements of the entities reinforce the concern about the possible backwardness in the environmental agenda if the candidate is elected. The criticism adds to a history of controversies involving the Bolsonaro family and the environmental agenda.

Connection with Salles's 'boyade'

During the government of Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023), Flavio's father, a phrase spoken by the then minister of Meio Ambiente, Ricardo Salles, became public during a ministerial meeting at the Palacio do Planalto. At the time, Salles suggested that Bolsonaro take measures to pass the “boyade” in environmental regulation.

He argued that it was time for the then-Bolsonaro government to adopt measures that would loosen environmental rules while the attention of the population was turned to the news about the Covid-19 pandemic. The expression "passing the buoy" became a symbol of criticism of the former president's environmental management.

Risk of resumption of past ideas

Recalling this statement from Salles, the Executive Secretary of the Climate Observatory, Marcio Astrini, assessed that the affirmation of Flávio Bolsonaro during the campaign act on Monday represents a "risk" of Brazil taking up the ideas of Jair Bolsonaro on meio ambiente. The assessment connects the speech of the candidate to the legacy of the previous government, marked by record deforestation in the Amazon.

The negative repercussions come at a time when the environmental agenda is gaining prominence in the electoral debate, especially among voters concerned about climate change and forest preservation. The source did not detail whether the Flávio Bolsonaro campaign responded to criticism.

The episode reinforces the clash between visions of economic development and environmental protection, a central theme for the future of the Amazon and Brazilian agribusiness. The continuity of coverage on the proposals of the candidates for the region is essential for the informed voter.
