Ex-presidente José Sarney remains hospitalized in a São Paulo hospital
Sarney is being treated for bacterial pneumonia and his condition is stable

The former president of the Republic, José Sarney, 96 years old, remains hospitalized in the Syrian-Lebanese Hospital, in the capital of São Paulo. He was admitted to the hospital on Thursday (24) to have a check-up after receiving a diagnosis of pneumonia.
According to the hospital, Sarney’s health picture is the same as on Thursday, when the last medical bulletin was released informing that he had been admitted for clinical evaluation and continued treatment of a bacterial pneumonia. The clinical picture in the former president is stable.
Sarney was admitted on September 13 in Maranhão. A bulletin released by UDI Hospital, of Rede D’Or, in Maranhão, already reported a respiratory infection (pneumonia), with a stable condition.
Last week, Sarney posted a video on his social networks communicating his going to São Paulo to make an assessment.
"I'm going to São Paulo because after the pneumonia I had, I need to have a checkup to see how I'm doing, since I'm 96," he said.
José Sarney was president of Brazil from 1985 to 1990. He was also a senator of the Republic and governor of Maranhão. In 2014 he announced his retirement from political career.
