Extratropical cyclone puts Paraná on alert; Ponta Grossa will have rain and gusts

An extratropical cyclone in the Paraná should increase instability in the coming days and favor storms in different regions of the state. In Ponta Grossa, the updated forecast of Simepar already indicates rain between Monday (28) and Thursday (1o), accompanied by gusts of wind that can reach 58 km/h on Wednesday (30).

The change in weather conditions is related to the organization of a low-pressure area and the advance of a cold front by the Southern Region. Weather projections point to the possibility of heavy rain, storms, hail and strong gusts of wind mainly during the passage of the system.

Reports based on the latest weather projections indicate that the extratropical cyclone is expected to be organized between Tuesday (29) and Wednesday (30), between Uruguay, Rio Grande do Sul and areas near the Atlantic Ocean. The system should reinforce the cold front that advances in the south of the country.

Ponta Grossa will have rain in the coming days

In Ponta Grossa, the effects of change in time appear in the Simepar projections even before the intensification of the cyclone.

For Monday (28), the agency points to an 83% probability of rain and a cumulative forecast of 6.6 millimeters. Wind gusts can reach 47 km/h.

On Tuesday (29), the chance of rain rises to 98%, with a forecast of approximately 9.2 millimeters and gusts of up to 50 km/h. On Wednesday (30), the chance of rain remains at 98%, while gusts can reach 58 km/h.

The figures are based on the forecast available on Sunday (27) and may change as new rounds of weather models.

Paraná is in the spotlight

Inmet also put hundreds of municipalities in Paraná in attention for storms between Monday and Tuesday. The warning foresees the possibility of heavy rain, gusts of wind and hailfall in areas of the state.

With the formation of the extratropical cyclone in Paraná and the advance of the cold front, other areas of the Southern Region may also record high volumes of precipitation.

In the most affected areas of southern Brazil, projections indicate accumulated areas that can reach approximately 200 millimeters during the period of greatest instability. These volumes, however, do not represent a specific forecast for Ponta Grossa.

Temporals can cause disorders

The combination of heavy rain and wind increases the risk of flooding, tree falls, roof damage, and interruptions in the power supply.

The intensity of the storms can vary greatly between municipalities and even between different points of the same city. Therefore, the recommendation is to follow the updated warnings of Simepar, Inmet and Defesa Civil.

At Ponta Grossa, the currently available forecast does not point to 100 km/h gusts: the highest value projected by Simepar for the next few days is 58 km/h on Wednesday (30). The winds of approximately 100 km/h mentioned in the projections refer to the most intense storms predicted for some areas of the Southern Region.

On Wednesday, the cold front is also expected to advance towards areas further north, extending the instability to parts of the South Mato Grosso and São Paulo.
