'Foi Deus': driver says he almost died in fatal accident on PR-151

Driver Antônio José Paderes, 51, said he narrowly escaped the serious accident recorded on Thursday in PR-151, between Castro and Carambeí. According to him, the truck that caused the collision was at high speed and hit the back of his car before hitting a municipal health vehicle. One person died.

In a report made at the site, Antônio said that he was stopped due to congestion when he observed the truck approaching through the rear-view mirror. The cargo vehicle would have triggered the alert and started to horn repeatedly. Realizing that the truck could not stop, the driver tried to take the car to the sidewalk.

“I saw the truck coming and honking. I tried to throw the car to the side of the road to avoid a tragedy," he said. Despite the attempt, the truck hit the back of Antonio's vehicle. With the force of the impact, the car rolled on the track and collided against the rear of a Chevrolet Onix that was also stopped in congestion.

The truck continued to be unruly and hit the vehicle belonging to the Piraí do Sul Health Area.

The driver said he narrowly escaped.

Antonio said he was turning his back on the site of the most serious collision and heard only the loud noise caused by the impact. When he managed to get out of the car, he saw the truck toppled and the Health vehicle completely destroyed. “It was a really scary noise. When I left, I saw the tragedy, the vehicle completely destroyed and the truck already toppled.”

For the driver, the fact that he was able to move the car a few meters was decisive to prevent it from being hit directly by the truck. "According to him, it was God who helped and released him, because it would be his car that would be in that accident," the BnT team said.

Antonio was already shaken due to another accident that he had witnessed recently in the Imbituva region. After escaping Thursday's collision, he said he was even more frightened.

Vehicle was going to hospital in Ponta Grossa

The mayor of Piraí do Sul informed the BnT that the municipal vehicle involved in the accident was heading for Ponta Grossa. The trip was aimed at exchanging companions of a patient admitted to a hospital in the city. According to the mayor, the municipal administration mobilized teams to provide care on the spot and support the people involved and their families.

The city was already aware of the identity of the person who died, but said that the confirmation will be made by means of an official note. Out of respect for family members, the name will not be disclosed before formal communication.

The truck lost the brakes.

The information initially raised at the site indicates that the truck was following the highway when it had a failure in the brake system. The cargo vehicle initially hit the car driven by Antônio, who rode on the track and hit the Onix. Then, the truck advanced over the Health vehicle and fell on the side of the highway.

Emergency, security and rescue teams worked to attend to the occurrence and to remove the victim who was trapped in the hardware. The exact circumstances of the accident will be determined by the responsible authorities.
