Giant waves struck the fishing port of Fugang in Taiwan’s Taitung County on Friday as super typhoon Champi approached. The strength of the sea impressed by the intensity, with huge bodies of water advancing against the port structures and provoking a strong hangover in the region.

The phenomenon occurs amid extreme weather conditions caused by the tropical cyclone, considered one of the most intense of 2026. The combination of strong winds and maritime turmoil has transformed the coastal landscape, increasing the risks to vessels, fishermen and residents close to the coast.

Giant waves are caused by the force of the typhoon

According to information released by the Taiwanese Ministry of Interior, the formation of giant waves is related to the combination of the external circulation of Typhoon Champi and the northeast monsoon, a phenomenon characterized by seasonal winds.

This interaction intensified the agitation of the ocean, producing high, long-period waves capable of transporting large amounts of energy to coastal areas.

In the port of Fugang, the force of the waves against the protective structures highlighted the intensity of the maritime conditions. The situation has also heightened the concern of the authorities with the safety of people who frequent port regions.

Authorities warn of danger on the coast

In the face of the violence of the waves, the Taiwanese government has issued a warning that the population should avoid approaching the sea, especially in ports, beaches and other coastal areas.

The recommendation also applies to people who want to observe the hangover, since waves of great intensity can advance unexpectedly and pose a risk to life.

The authorities point out that dangerous conditions may persist during the influence of the weather system on the region.

Super Typhoon Champi Threatens Taiwan with Extreme Winds

Super typhoon Champi has reached category 5, with sustained winds close to 300 km/h and gusts estimated at up to 360 km/h during its period of greatest intensity.

The phenomenon has advanced across the Western Pacific, putting Taiwan, China and areas of the Philippines on alert for severe weather conditions.

In addition to giant waves, the storm can cause intense rainfall and destructive winds. The forecast indicates a gradual weakening of the cyclone, but the risk of hangovers and dangerous conditions at sea may continue even after the reduction in wind intensity.
