Hōlei Marine Arch Collapses in Hawaii After Storm

The Hōlei Marine Arch, a 500-year-old rocky formation in Hawaii's Volcanoes National Park, collapsed into the Pacific Ocean after Tropical Storm Nolo. The National Park Service believes the collapse occurred on Sunday (27/9), when the park was closed. The structure had shown signs of instability for years.

The famous Hōlei Sea Arch, a rock formation of approximately 500 years located in the Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park, collapsed in the Pacific Ocean after the passage of tropical storm Nolo. The structure, carved by waves in an ancient lava flow, was 27 meters high and was one of the most visited tourist spots on the Big Island.

According to the National Park Service, the collapse likely occurred on Sunday when the park was temporarily closed due to the storm. There were no injuries, as the area was forbidden to the public at the time of the collapse.

History of instability worries authorities

The coastline that bordered the arch already showed signs of instability for years, as reported by the park. Earthquakes during the eruption of Kīlauea volcano in 2018 and the collapse of its dome damaged cliffs near the rock formation.

In 2020, the original observation area was closed after the emergence of new cracks on the ground. A new observation point was opened to allow visitors to continue to admire the arch safely, but the structure remained vulnerable to the forces of nature.

Tropical Storm Nolo Accelerated Process

The passage of tropical storm Nolo through Hawaii brought strong winds and intense waves, which may have been the final trigger for the collapse of the arc. The park had been closed since before the arrival of the phenomenon, as a preventive measure to protect visitors.

Although the storm did not cause widespread damage on the island, the impact on the already weakened cliffs was enough to tear down the structure. The park’s management did not detail whether there were other significant damages in the coastal region.

The park is home to active volcanoes and unique landscapes

The Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park on Big Island is home to two of the most active volcanoes in the world: Kīlauea and Mauna Loa. The region is known for its dynamic volcanic landscapes, which include lava flows, craters and coastal formations such as the Hōlei Sea Arch.

Constant volcanic activity shapes the territory and creates new geological formations, but also poses risks to existing structures. The collapse of the arch is a reminder of the transformative force of nature in the Hawaiian archipelago.

Visitors must keep distance from the edges

After the collapse, the park administration reinforced the orientation so that visitors keep distance from the edges of the cliffs and the forbidden areas. These areas may collapse without warning, especially after extreme weather events.

The park continues to monitor the stability of the cliffs and will be able to adjust the visitation areas as needed. Visitor safety is a priority, and new bans can be implemented if there is a risk of further collapses.

Loss of a natural symbol of Hawaii

The Hōlei Sea Arc was one of the postcards of Volcanoes National Park, attracting tourists from all over the world to observe its imposing structure over the ocean. Its fall represents a significant loss to Hawaii’s natural heritage.

Despite the disappearance of the arch, the park continues to offer other notable attractions, such as volcanic craters, lava tubes and viewpoints with panoramic views. The administration encourages visitors to explore open areas with responsibility and respect for safety standards.

For those planning to visit the park, it is recommended to consult the official website before the trip, as the conditions can change quickly due to volcanic activity and weather events. The collapse of the arc serves as a warning to the importance of following the guidelines of the local authorities.
