IAT authorizes Castrolanda to build new tortilla factory and expand UBL
The projects are part of the R$500 million investment package announced by Castrolanda at the beginning of this year, its largest ever.

Castrolanda Cooperativa Agroindustrial, obtained from the Instituto Agua e Terra (IAT), the installation licenses that authorize the advancement of two important expansion projects of the cooperative: the construction of the Corn Tortilla Unit and the expansion of the Milk Benefit Unit (UBL), both in the city of Castro. The projects are part of the R$ 500 million investment package announced by the cooperative earlier this year, the largest in its history.
For the Corn Tortilla Unit, the issuance of the Installation License represents the authorization for the start of the works. The project has been presented and discussed with the IAT technical team for more than a year, during which alternatives were evaluated to minimize environmental impacts both during the execution of the work and in the future operation of the unit.
"The issuance of the installation license is an important milestone for the project, because it formalizes the environmental approval for the start of the works. The licensing involves the analysis of the engineering project and, with the issuance of the license, we have the confirmation that the enterprise and the proposed environmental measures meet the requirements established by the environmental body," explains Thiago Molina, environmental supervisor of Castrolanda.
The tortillas factory is part of the cooperative’s planning to expand its operations and diversify production in the new industrial district of Castrolanda, in addition to a structured demand in the B2B market. With the license issued, the project enters a new stage, which allows the advancement of the deployment of the structure.
Expansion of UBL
The Milk Benefit Unit was also covered by the environmental license that authorizes the construction of a new drying tower, an investment that will allow to expand and qualify the production capacity.
As in the Corn Tortilla Unit project, the UBL licensing process also went through a development period of more than twelve months of analysis, with the elaboration of the projects and the dialogue between Castrolanda and the IAT technical team for the evaluation and definition of environmental solutions. “Obtaining this license is fundamental to enable the necessary investments in the plant and so that Castrolanda can keep pace with the growth of milk production of our cooperatives,” Thiago emphasizes.
The new drying tower is part of the set of investments aimed at expanding the capacity of UBL and marks a new stage for the unit, with the potential to increase milk processing and contribute to the generation of jobs.
For the environmental supervisor, obtaining the licenses reinforces the way Castrolanda conducts its expansion projects. "The obtaining of the license is the result of this dialogue and cooperation with the environmental body and highlights Castrolanda's commitment to conduct its expansion projects in a responsible way and in compliance with environmental legislation," he concludes.
The expansion of the Milk Benefit Unit is developed in partnership with the Frisia and Capal cooperatives, through Unium.
