Lula accumulates 23 days abroad in 7 trips in 2026

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) arrived 23 days abroad in 2026 after the trip to New York, in the Estados Unidos, to participate in the 81st General Assembly of the United Nations. It was the 7th international trip of the petista in the year, which visited 10 countries. The information was confirmed by the official agenda of the Planalto Palace.

Lula embarked on Sunday (20 September 2026) and left New York on Tuesday (22 September), after speaking at the opening of the General Assembly. He arrived in Brazil at 11:40 p.m. on the same day. The passage was shortened because of the approach of the first round of elections, scheduled for October 4.

Speech at the UN addressed global and national issues

At the UN, the president spoke about international conflicts, multilateralism, national sovereignty and democracy. It also led to the speech of Brazilian political themes, such as elections, Pix and bets. The UN is failing in one of its highest missions: to rid humanity of the scourge of war. Their credibility has never been so low, their ability to protect the most vulnerable has never been so small.”

The president also directed criticism of the Security Council, saying it “does not fulfill its role.” Regarding international trade, he mentioned the tariff: “The WTO breathes by devices. Countries use tariffs as a weapon and blackmail. The consequences will be disastrous.”

Previous trips: Europe and Latin America

In April, the president made a number of commitments in Europe. It went through Spain, Germany and Portugal from 16 to 22. He participated in the Forum for Democracy, the Hannover Fair and in meetings with European leaders.

The rest of the trips were concentrated in Latin America. Lula was in Panama to participate in the Latin American and Caribbean Economic Forum and traveled to Colombia for commitments related to the Celac (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States).

Agenda shortened because of the elections

The trip to New York was planned to be brief. The president stayed only two days in the city, returning to Brazil on Tuesday night. The decision to shorten the stay was motivated by the approach of the first round of elections, scheduled for October 4.
