Mother suffers R$ 557 loss after backing out of children's party
A mother reported a loss of US$ 111 (about R$ 557) after three children confirmed their presence for her son's birthday party but did not show up. The case was shared on Reddit and sparked a debate about etiquette at children's events.

A mother faced an embarrassing situation and financial loss after planning a birthday party for her son. She reported that she was left with a deficit of $111 after three children did not show up for the event, even after confirmation of attendance. The case was shared on Reddit, where the woman sought advice on the conduct she took.
Invitation to the whole class
The hostess stated that she invited all the boys of her son’s class to the celebration, held in a Laser Tag space. She organized the party in advance and paid the amount corresponding to the number of guests expected. The woman did not detail the city or state where the incident took place.
The surprise came when one of the parents asked if two other children could go to the birthday party. "I was extremely confused. I had invited boys and realized that maybe they had twins, a boy and a girl, in the class,” the mother said in her account.
Additional cost for extra guests
The woman explained that the amount for the class of guests had already been paid. To add the two children requested, she would have to disburse $37 for each. In a message to those responsible, she wrote: "Hello! I'm glad XXXX can come! I apologize for the confusion, we did not know there were twins in the class and we had only invited the boys. We have a reservation, but I can call and add two more places if you want to pay the additional cost of $74 ($37 x 2)."
According to the author of the post, she tried to be as "educated" as possible. However, her husband was "shocked" and offended by the request, stating that she had been "gross", although he also did not agree to pay for the uninvited children.
Confirmation and last minute withdrawal
After some time, one of the children’s guardians replied that the three children would go to the birthday party and that he would not mind paying the extra cost. The mother of the birthday party then adjusted the reservation, paying the extra to accommodate the brothers.
Half an hour after the party began, the children’s mother sent a message saying they would arrive soon. However, more than an hour after the event began, she suddenly communicated that the three brothers would not attend. The additional money was not transferred, leaving the hostess with the total loss of $111.
Repercussions and etiquette at parties
The report sparked discussion among Reddit users about the responsibility of guests to report absences. Many have pointed out that a lack of prior notice is considered a lack of consideration, especially when there are costs per person. Label experts recommend that parents confirm attendance only if they are sure and notify the host as soon as possible in case of an unforeseen event.
The situation also raises the debate about how to handle requests from extra guests. The hostess’ approach to passing on the additional cost divided opinions: some found it fair, others considered it inelegant. The husband even criticized his wife, but he also did not want to bear the expense.
To avoid similar losses, party organizers suggest establishing clear deadlines for confirmation and informing about the collection policy in case of absence. Some buffets offer the option of payment per person on the day of the event, which reduces the financial risk.
The case serves as an alert for parents and guardians about the importance of transparent communication in children’s events. Lack of consideration can generate not only embarrassment, but also material damage to those who organize the celebration.
