Since April, most of the weather stations of the Paraná Environmental Technology and Monitoring System (Simepar) have been raining above the historical average. In October it will be no different. Under the influence of the peak of the El Niño phenomenon, the month will bring temperature oscillations and again rain exceeding the values of climatology.

The Simepar forecast indicates that the performance of the El Niño phenomenon will continue to favor the frequent passage of front systems over the Paraná, contributing to the rainfall volume at the end of the month being above the historical average. The largest deviations from the climatology are predicted for the West, Southwest and South of Paraná, where more recurrent and more intense rain events are predicted.

In terms of temperatures, the trend for October is that the values close next month or slightly above the climatology. This does not mean that the month will have thermal comfort on a continuous basis. Periods of higher temperatures are expected in the days leading up to the passage of the front systems, associated with the action of the warmer air mass that comes from the interior of the continent. In the North and Northwest, where warm air arrives most significantly, periods of above-average temperatures will be more expressive.

After the passage of the front systems, the temperatures decrease. Thus, the month should alternate between warmer periods and periods of lower temperatures. When considering each month, these oscillations tend to compensate, keeping the average temperature of October close to the climatological values.

Climatology

Historically in October the wettest regions are the West and Southwest. Near Francisco Beltrão and Foz do Iguaçu, rainfall volumes average between 225 mm and 250 mm. Near St. Helena and Cascavel, they are between 200 mm and 225 mm.

In the region of Guarapuava and Marechal Cândido Rondon, the historical average volume of rainfall in October is between 175 mm and 200 mm. In the Northwest and South Center, as well as in the Litoral, it is between 150 mm and 175 mm. In the North Pioneer, Campos Gerais and southern part of the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba, is between 125 mm and 150 mm.

The region with the least historical rainfall in October is the northern part of the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba, including the capital, where the average volumes are between 100 mm and 125 mm.

Maximum temperatures, usually recorded in the afternoon, historically in October are highest at the northwest end of the Paraná, averaging above 30°C. In the extreme west and north, they are between 28°C and 30°C. In the Southwest and Campos Gerais, they are between 26°C and 28°C. In the Central region and in the Paraná coast, they are between 24 ° C and 26 ° C. In the South and Metropolitan Region of Curitiba, they are between 22°C and 24°C.

Minimum temperatures, usually recorded at dawn in October, are historically highest in the Northwest, averaging between 18°C and 20°C. In the west, north and coast, they are between 16°C and 18°C. In the Southwest and Campos Gerais, as well as in the eastern part of the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba, they are between 14°C and 16°C. The minimum temperatures are lowest in October historically in the South Center and the western part of the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba, between 12 ° C and 14 ° C.

Average temperatures, i.e. the average of all day temperatures, are historically highest in October in the extreme West, Northwest and in the cities bordering São Paulo, on average between 22°C and 24°C. Gradually the temperatures decrease on average across the state to the South Center and the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba, where the average temperatures are lower: they are between 16 ° C and 18 ° C, with emphasis on the capital and the region of Palmas and General Carneiro, where the averages are even lower, between 14 ° C and 16 ° C.
