Pix without a R$ 500 cap from this Thursday onwards
With the change, the customer will be able to request from the bank an increase or reduction of the limits applied to transactions, which will continue to be subject to the security rules of each account.

The Pix by approach has new rules starting this Thursday (1st). The Banco Central (BC) withdrew the specific ceiling of R$ 500 per transaction for this payment modality. With the change, the customer may ask the bank to increase or reduce the limits applied to the operations, which will continue to be subject to the security rules of each account.
The change was established by BCB Normative Instruction No. 746, published by Banco Central in June. The measure also achieves transactions carried out by QR Code, access keys and operations initiated by the Open Finance (data sharing mechanism between financial institutions) no redirection (JSR) journey.
In practice, the end of the $500 ceiling does not mean that the user will be able to make payments of any amount automatically. The limit will continue to be determined by the security settings and values set for each customer.
What Changes
Until now, the Pix by approximation had a specific restriction: each transaction carried out by the modality could not exceed R $ 500.
From October 1st:
The fixed ceiling of R$ 500 ceases to exist;
the customer may request an increase or decrease in the limits;
Payments may exceed R$ 500, provided they are within the limits of the account;
the bank shall make available a management tool in the application;
The general security rules of Pix continue to apply.
There will therefore be no new single ceiling to replace the $500. A customer can make a transaction of $600 or $1,000 per approximation if the limit of his account allows it.
How to adjust
The change of the limit will be made by the application of the financial institution. The tool should allow the client to manage the authorized values for this type of operation.
The procedure may vary depending on the bank, but the logic will be:
access the institution's application;
locate the Pix settings;
access the Pix boundary area or management by approximation;
requesting the increase or reduction of the allowable amount;
follow the authentication steps required by the bank.
The removal of the specific ceiling of R$ 500, therefore, does not eliminate the mechanisms of protection against suspicious movements.
How it works
Pix by Approach uses NFC technology, which allows communication between the mobile phone and the payment machine without the need to enter data.
Available since February 2025, the modality can be used directly by the bank’s app or by compatible digital wallets.
To use the feature through a digital wallet, you must first link the bank account to the service.
To activate
open the digital cell phone wallet;
choose the option to link an account;
Bank application will be triggered;
Authorize Pix to link by approximation.
Once configured, the payment follows a dynamic similar to that of a card registered on the mobile.
To pay
inform the establishment that will make the payment via Pix;
check the data and the amount of the billing;
Approach the cell phone to the machine.
make the required authentication;
confirm the payment.
Depending on the bank configuration and digital wallet, you may need to authenticate the operation before completion.
Attention to the blows
The possibility of making larger payments by approximation requires increased attention from the user. Since the mobile phone can complete the operation without having to open the banking application in certain situations, it is important to check the amount and the data of the billing before authorizing the payment.
Among the main care are:
check the value displayed on the machine and on the mobile phone;
check the establishment before approaching the appliance;
keep screen lock and authentication mechanisms active;
not to hand the unlocked cell phone to third parties;
follow the notifications of transactions;
periodically review the limits set in the bank application.
Expanding mode
Created by Banco Central in 2020, Pix has established itself as one of the main payment methods used in the country. In August, the system moved more than R$ 3.73 trillion and recorded about 8.11 billion transactions.
The Pix by approximation, however, still crawls to win the interest of the user. In August, the modality registered only 2 million transactions, only 0.06% of the total operations in the month.
Despite the low adherence, the volume of Pix transactions by approximation grows significantly. In January, the total number of operations in the modality was 1.06 million.
