Ponta Grossa Municipality Expands Tree Planting; See Which Neighborhoods Received

The City Council expanded the planting of trees in Ponta Grossa on Wednesday (23), with the inclusion of 43 new seedlings in public spaces of Jardim Boreal, in the Chapada region, and Jardim das Flores, in the Neves neighborhood. The initiative is part of the permanent actions of urban arborization developed by the Municipal Secretariat of Meio Ambiente, with the aim of expanding the green areas and improving the environmental quality in different regions of the city.

The work was carried out by teams of the Department of Parks and Squares Maintenance. In the Boreal Garden, 13 seedlings were planted. In the Jardim das Flores square, 30 more trees were added to the existing vegetation.

Among the species used are aracá, ipê, jacarandá, gurucaia and dedaleiro. The choice of seedlings considers the characteristics of public spaces and integrates the municipal planning to expand the afforestation in different neighborhoods.

In addition to the plantings carried out by the teams of the City Hall, the Municipality also develops community actions and maintains partnerships with institutions to encourage environmental preservation.

Lake Olarias received about 300 seedlings

This Wednesday’s interventions continue other tree-planting initiatives carried out in Ponta Grossa.

On Saturday, about 300 native species were planted in the Lake of Potteries, during an action alluding to National Tree Day.

The activity was attended by partner institutions, such as the Nursery of the State University of Ponta Grossa (UEPG), the Conea, of the Federal Technological University of Paraná (UTFPR), the Environmental Standard extension project, of the Journalism course of UEPG, and the João Académico Center (ZXXX).

Added to the two actions, approximately 343 seedlings were planted in public spaces of the municipality in the last days.

The work seeks to expand the plant cover, recover green areas and stimulate the participation of the community in environmental preservation initiatives.

Tree planting in Ponta Grossa follows municipal planning

The expansion of urban forestry integrates a permanent policy of the City Hall, which combines new plantings, environmental recovery and planning the management of existing trees.

One of the main tools used in this work is the Plano Municipal of Urban Arborization (PMAU).

The document guides the planning, implementation, maintenance and management of the city’s forestry.

Among the measures envisaged are the raising of existing trees, the identification of suitable places to receive new seedlings and the definition of the most suitable species for each space.

The planning also considers the characteristics of urban environments, seeking to ensure that the growth of trees is compatible with the conditions of each location.

Ponta Grossa received international certification of arborization

In March 2026, Ponta Grossa received the international Tree City of the World certification for the first time.

The award is given by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

The certification considers criteria related to the management of urban tree planting, planning, investments and actions to enhance trees in cities.

More recently, the City Council has also formalized support for NAPI Biodiversity: RESTORE, a research network dedicated to studies on ecological restoration, biodiversity conservation and the development of tree species seedlings.

The partnership provides for the integration between the scientific knowledge produced by the researchers and the municipal programs of urban forestry and environmental recovery.

The City Council highlights the importance of permanent arborization

According to the municipal secretary of Meio Ambiente, Carla Kritski, the planting of trees should be carried out in a continuous and planned way, considering the characteristics of each region of the city.

“Planting trees in the city cannot be a restricted action to a commemorative date. It is a permanent work, which needs to consider where the tree will be planted, which species is suitable for that space and what benefits it may bring over the next few years. This is what we have been looking to do in Ponta Grossa: expand the arborization in a planned way, reaching different neighborhoods and transforming our public spaces," he says.

The City Council informs that it will continue to develop tree planting actions in squares, parks and other public spaces, combining the work of municipal teams with the participation of the community and partner institutions.
