The Host Family program at Ponta Grossa is open all year round for people interested in temporarily welcoming children and adolescents away from their family of origin by judicial determination. Last week, the Ponta Grossa Social Welfare Foundation (FASPG) promoted a new training for families interested in participating in the service.

The training also included the participation of families who are already part of the program and aimed to prepare the volunteers to offer a safe, affective and protective environment to children and adolescents during the period of reception.

The Family Welcoming Service is a temporary measure. Unlike adoption, the child or adolescent who is fostered stays with the voluntary family while the necessary measures are taken for the situation that motivated the removal from the family of origin.

During the training, the participants received guidance on the Unified System of Social Assistance (SUAS), the social assistance network of Ponta Grossa, the responsibilities of the host families and the necessary procedures for entry into the program.

Families share experiences

The meetings also had reports of people who have already participated in the Family Welcoming Service and of families who currently receive children or adolescents.

Among the topics discussed were family coexistence, the preservation of bonds and the particularities of the care of children and adolescents with disabilities or mental disorders.

The preparation and follow-up of the families are carried out by a technical team formed by a psychologist and social worker.

According to the president of FASPG, Tatyana Belo, the training of volunteers is an important step to ensure the protection of children and adolescents served.

“Investing in the preparation and follow-up of welcoming families is strengthening a network of protection committed to the guarantee of rights and the integral protection of children and adolescents,” he said.

Registration is open all year round

FASPG informs that people interested in participating in the program can seek the Family Welcoming Service throughout the year.

New training classes are organized periodically to prepare candidates before the start of the reception.

The first step is to contact the Family Welcoming Service to schedule an initial interview. From this care, the process of registration and evaluation of the family begins.

Who can be a Host Family?

The basic requirements to participate are to be between 21 and 65 years old and reside in Ponta Grossa.

It is also necessary that all residents of the residence agree to participate in the program.

The family cannot be registered in the National Adoption System, since the reception has a provisional character and does not replace the adoption process.

It is also required that the interested parties have no criminal history and have time and emotional availability to care for the child or adolescent being taken in.

How to participate

Interested parties should seek the Family Welcoming Service, linked to the Social Welfare Foundation of Ponta Grossa.
