Ponta Grossa Writer is Semi-Finalist in Jabuti Prize with Novel "Deepirex"
Paulo Eduardo Gonçalves is in the Literary Novel Selection alongside names like Milton Hatoum, Itamar Vieira Junior and Aline Bei

The literature of Ponta Grossa gains national prominence with the classification of "Deepirex", by the writer from Ponta Grossa Paulo Eduardo Gonçalves, among the semifinalists of the Jabuti 2026 Prize. Published by the publisher Arte & Letra, the book competes in the Literary Romance category, from the Literature axis, in the 68th edition of one of the most important literary awards in the country.
The selection places the author of the Campos Gerais alongside writers such as Milton Hatoum, Itamar Vieira Junior, Aline Bei and Cristovão Tezza. The list was released on September 29 by the Brazilian Chamber of Books (CBL).
In "Deepirex", Gonçalves builds a protagonist who proclaims himself a hero, but travels a path marked by addiction, cynicism and frustrated attempts to find human connections. Between experiences in a public hospital and encounters in the streets of a city crossed by contradictions, the narrator exposes power relations, hypocrisies and the degradation of social bonds.
In the presentation of the book, writer and visual artist Julie Fank defines this trajectory as a “social autopsy”. With corrosive humor and grotesque situations, the soap opera transforms the decadence of his character in terms of criticism of institutions, labor relations and the promises of heroism.
Fank also brings Gonçalves’ writing closer to the spirit of rebellion of the Beat Generation and the cursed poets. The work explores the discomfort of a character who identifies the farces around him while participating in them, in a narrative about disappointment, desire and search for meaning.
The five finalists will be announced on October 14. The winners will be announced on October 27, during a ceremony in the São Paulo room in the São Paulo capital.
"Deepirex" can be found in the publishing house Arte e Letra, in the Martins Fontes bookstores, of the Vila and Megafauna, in addition to the Amazon platforms, Magazine Luiza and Mercado Livre, according to the availability of stock. In Portugal, the book is also marketed by Worten.
