The mayor of Jaguariaíva, Juca Sloboda, spoke to BnT News on the morning of Wednesday (14), about the damage caused by the heavy rains and winds that hit the municipality in the early morning of Tuesday (13). According to him, the city has been suffering from the effects of the El Niño phenomenon.
According to the mayor, in September alone Jaguariaíva recorded 375 millimeters of rainfall, with only six days of good weather. In October, the forecast is even more worrying, with an expectation of 500 millimeters. On the morning of Wednesday (14), Simepar announced that Jaguariaíva in 13 days of this month has already exceeded the average rainfall that is 168.7 mm. With this, 181.4 mm have already been counted.
"In the early hours of yesterday (13), the rain came accompanied by a windstorm. It knocked down a lot of trees, damaged some homes, blocked streets and roads and caused the fall of electricity in various points of the city and also in the interior, bringing disturbances for companies and for the population," Juca explained.
From the early hours of Tuesday morning, teams from the City Hall and the Secretariat of Infrastructure, accompanied by Deputy Mayor Reginaldo, worked to disavow roads and repair the damage. Fortunately, there were no casualties and the damage to the homes was minor.
The most affected neighborhoods were Taquaral, Nossa Senhora of Fátima and Vila Edith. In Taquaral, the fall of a tree on the power grid that serves the water collection station of the Capivari River left part of the city without water supply for almost all day.
According to the mayor, all services have been restored. “Some places came back even before yesterday’s lunch, others during the afternoon. The trees were cut down and removed by our team. Everything is in order and calm now,” he said.
Jaguariaíva has a contingency plan for emergency situations. The municipality has a team of Defesa Civil trained and equipped with tarps, tiles, mattresses and food for emergency care. In the last three months, the city also carried out preventive actions, such as cleaning the Capivari River, cleaning drains and cutting down trees at risk of falling.
“We are ready. We hope that it does not happen, but if it does, we are ready to meet our citizens," said the mayor.
The population that needs help can contact by phones of the City Hall (3535-9400), Fire (193), SAMU (192), Municipal Civil Guard and Secretariat of Public Security, which coordinates the Defesa Civil in the municipality.
