San Martin Tunnel Opened for Vehicles on Monday (19) in Ponta Grossa
San Martin Tunnel has traffic reopened on Monday (19) in Ponta Grossa, after paving and drainage works. Check the improvements.
The Prefeitura de Ponta Grossa announced the release of vehicle traffic in the San Martin Tunnel by the late afternoon of Monday (19). The passage, located under the railway line and responsible for connecting the San Martin Core to the rest of the Neves neighborhood, underwent revitalization works to improve circulation conditions and reduce problems caused by water accumulation.
The main change was the replacement of the old asphalt pavement by a concrete structure, considered more resistant to the conditions of the site. A new underground drainage system was also implemented, with the aim of facilitating the drainage of rainwater and increasing the durability of the track.
Works seek to solve old problems
The services were carried out by the Municipal Secretariat of Public Services and had as a priority to correct recurring problems of infrastructure in the tunnel.
Previously, water accumulation during rainy periods contributed to the deterioration of the asphalt, causing damage to the track and requiring frequent maintenance interventions.
To solve the situation, the teams removed the old pavement, carried out the preparation and compaction of the base and installed pipes to collect and direct the water out of the passage.
The intervention also counted on the partnership of Sanepar, responsible for improvements and reinforcements in the water and sewage networks that pass through the structure.
Rain and vandalism interfered in the work
During the execution of the work, the teams faced difficulties that interfered with the schedule of services.
An act of vandalism damaged part of the newly applied concrete, making it necessary to rebuild the affected section. In addition, the intense rains recorded during the period impaired the initial progress of the activities.
Despite the setbacks, the City Council confirmed the resumption of the circulation of vehicles on Monday.
The tunnel will receive further improvements.
Even with the reopening, work on the San Martin Tunnel is not yet fully completed.
Among the services provided are the washing of the structure, installation of gutters, improvements in signage, painting and implementation of lighting.
To allow the execution of these steps, the passage may undergo new temporary interdictions. According to the City Council, the closures will be scheduled to occur outside of the busiest hours, seeking to reduce the disturbances to drivers.
The municipal administration said that the population will be notified in advance of any blockages.
With the release of traffic, the expectation is to improve the mobility of residents of the San Martin Core and other regions of the Neves neighborhood that use the passage daily.
