San Martin Tunnel will be closed for up to 15 days in Ponta Grossa; see alternative route

Drivers using the San Martin tunnel in Ponta Grosa must be aware of changes in traffic starting on Wednesday (23). The City Council announced that the passage under the railway line will be totally prohibited for the realization of works of maintenance and replacement of the pavement. The blockade will begin in the morning and may last from 10 to 15 days, as informed by the municipal administration.

The intervention was announced by prefeita Elizabeth Schmidt in a video posted on social networks. Alongside the municipal secretary Eduardo, the mayor explained that the existing asphalt will be removed and replaced by concrete, with the aim of increasing the durability of the pavement and improving safety conditions for drivers.

The pass is one of the main access routes to San Martin and other residential areas in the region.

Why is the St. Martin’s tunnel banned?

During the video, the secretary Eduardo explained that the passage has been in existence for more than 50 years and needs constant maintenance due to the conditions of the pavement.

According to him, the City Council decided to carry out the complete removal of the asphalt and execute a new concrete pavement, seeking to reduce the need for frequent interventions on the site. "The maintenance is constant and, for this reason, a replacement, the total removal and the execution in concrete will be made", explained the secretary.

The change in the material used also requires a period of curing of the concrete, during which the passage must remain closed to ensure the quality and durability of the service.

The prefeita Elizabeth Schmidt pointed out that the intervention aims to offer better traffic conditions to residents and drivers who use the tunnel on a daily basis. The disturbance is brief, but the improvement remains,” he said.

What will be the alternative route during the interdiction?

During the construction period, drivers who need to enter or leave São Martim must use access through Vila Dal Col, through Rua Paulo Grote.

The City Council’s guidance is that drivers schedule their commutes and use the alternative route while the passage under the railway line is prohibited.

When will the San Martin tunnel be released?

Although the initial statement from the City Hall informed that the passage would be closed for seven to ten days, in the video published on social networks the municipal administration presented a forecast of 10 to 15 days for the completion of the works.

The difference in time is related to the update released in the video, in which the secretary also explained the need to wait for the cure of the concrete before the release of the passage.

A definitive date for the reopening of the tunnel has not been reported so far.

The City Council advises drivers to use the alternative route during the execution of the services.
