Santa Casa honors families of organ donors in Ponta Grossa

The Santa Casa de Ponta Grossa will pay tribute to the families of organ and tissue donors during the Green September. The initiative highlights the importance of organ donation in Ponta Grossa and recognizes family members who, even in the face of the loss of a loved one, authorized the donation and contributed so that others had a new opportunity of life.

The action will be held at 9am, in the Green Area of Santa Casa, located at Rua Francisco Burzio, 774, in the Center of Ponta Grossa. The event is open to the community and is part of the activities of September Green, a month dedicated to raising awareness and encouraging organ and tissue donation.

During the programming, the donors’ relatives will be welcomed by the institution for a moment of recognition and thanks. At the end of the homage, a symbolic release of biodegradable balloons is planned, representing the hope and continuity of life provided by the gesture of giving.

Santa Casa registers 51 donors and benefits 117 people

In the last year, Santa Casa de Ponta Grossa registered 51 donors, who enabled the care of 117 people through the donation of organs and tissues.

Among the organs and tissues captured are kidneys, liver, heart and corneas.

The numbers reinforce the importance of organ donation in Ponta Grossa and the role of families authorizing the procedure at a time of loss.

For the technical director of Santa Casa, Dr. Rogério Clemente, the tribute represents an opportunity to publicly recognize the importance of the decision of these families.

Santa Casa follows 62 patients awaiting kidney transplantation

In addition to honoring donor families, the Santa Casa draws attention to the reality of patients waiting for a transplant.

Regional reference in nephrology, the institution currently follows 62 patients waiting for a kidney transplant.

For those living with chronic kidney disease and dependent on continued treatment, the possibility of receiving a new kidney may represent a significant change in routine and quality of life.

According to Santa Casa Hemodialysis Sector Manager Kelly Olineski, organ donation awareness also represents an opportunity to broaden the hope of patients waiting in line for transplants.

"They are patients who face a routine treatment and wait for the opportunity to receive a new kidney. To speak of bestowal is also to speak of hope and the possibility of offering a new beginning to those who are waiting.”

How to express the desire to be an organ donor?

Organ donation can benefit different people who are waiting for a transplant.

According to information from the Ministry of Health, a single donor can benefit up to eight people, depending on the organs that can be donated.

In Brazil, family authorization is essential for organ and tissue donation to occur after death.

Therefore, the Ministry of Health directs people to talk to their families and clearly express the desire to be donors.

Even when a person expresses in life the will to donate his organs, the withdrawal after death depends on family authorization.

The Santa Casa de Ponta Grossa reinforces that broadening the dialogue on the subject is one of the main ways to encourage donation.

The Green September initiative also seeks to recognize families who, in the face of a moment of loss, have contributed to offering new opportunities to patients waiting for a transplant.
