Simepar and IDR-PR end Alerta Geada service for this year on Friday (25)

The Simepar closes this Friday (25) the 32nd year of the Frost Alert. The service is offered annually between May and September, in partnership with the IDR-PR (Institute of Rural Development of Paraná), with support from the State Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply (SEAB), municipalities, cooperatives and producer associations.

Originally created to protect freshly planted coffee plants, Alerta Geada now serves various agricultural activities, such as poultry, pig farming, horticulture and forestry, for example, and also benefits other sectors of the economy, such as tourism, trade, financial market and construction.

This year, a daily forecast map for the next 72 hours has been available since May 4 on the Simepar and IDR-PR websites. The service allowed the adoption of preventive measures by producers.

In 2026, 145 daily bulletins were issued on the Simepar website explaining whether or not the weather conditions were favorable for the occurrence of frosts. The IDR sent to producers 30 specific alerts for the possibility of frost with the potential to cause damage to agricultural activities, being nine in May, nine in June, five in July, three in August and four in September.

The numbers are lower than in 2025, when 137 daily bulletins were issued and 39 alerts were triggered for the population. In addition to the length of the service period having been shorter in 2026, above-average temperatures in some regions have caused less favorable conditions for frost formation.

The frost is a typical phenomenon of the coldest period of the year, especially in the southern states of Brazil. It occurs mainly in situations of conjunction of a polar air mass acting on the region, more open sky, without the presence of clouds and with very weak wind speed.

Under these conditions, the Earth's surface loses heat very quickly by radiation to the atmosphere, causing the temperature drop to be more pronounced over the surface. The moisture of the nearby air will make the transformation between steam and ice, creating ice crystals on the surface.

With the gradual increase of temperatures climatologically occurring from the arrival of spring, there is less condition for the occurrence of frosts, and therefore the service is deactivated until the period leading up to the next winter, in May 2027.
