Strong rains: 18th Day of Castro Festival is postponed
Preventive decision aims to focus 100% of municipal resources on helping affected families and road reconstruction. Programming will be rescheduled for the end of October.

The 18th Festa do Dia de Castro was postponed by the City Hall. The commemorative event was scheduled to be held this weekend. The measure was taken by the mayor Reinaldo Cardoso in conjunction with the Crisis Room of Defesa Civil of the Municipality due to the extreme weather event that has hit the municipality in recent days, causing the overflow of rivers, floods in the urban area and serious damage to the infrastructure of the rural road network.
The new date for the celebrations, which include national attractions, ballooning and the traditional Trekker Trek, will be announced soon, as soon as there is a readjustment of the agenda with the artists and contracted partners.
For the mayor Reinaldo Cardoso, the absolute priority at the moment is the physical integrity of the residents and the mitigation of the damage caused by the floods. “Because of this serious situation that our municipality is going through this climate event and trying to avoid worse consequences, we decided to postpone the party. It's a security measure. First, the safety of our people,” said the chief executive.
With the postponement, all the human, financial and operational efforts of the municipal government are directed exclusively to emergency care of the population. According to the coordinator of Defesa Civil Municipal, Edmir Kirchof, the momentary cancellation of the event guarantees the total involvement of the secretariats in the relief actions. “The decision was made so that all the teams of the City Hall are focused and committed to the care of the population of the interior and here in the city,” Kirchof said.
The municipal administration expects that the celebrations can be transferred to next month. As explained by the Secretary of Government, Ricardo Cardoso, the planning of the event will continue to be worked in parallel to the emergency plan. “The schedule will be rescheduled for a new date, probably the end of October, so that we can serve families in this period,” the secretary said.
The teams of the Prefecture of Castro, the Defesa Civil (153), Firefighters (193) and the security forces remain mobilized 24 hours a day. The attention to the occurrences and the affected population is concentrated in the Crisis Center installed in the Municipal Palace, in Pedro Kaled Square, 22.
