Strong rains cause destruction in Ivaí and mayor warns about landslide risks
Mayor Orli de Cristo alerts residents after heavy rains caused landslides, destroyed manholes and left families isolated in Ivaí
The municipality of Ivaí, in the Campos Gerais do Paraná, faces an emergency situation due to the damage caused by the heavy rains recorded in recent days. In a statement on Monday, Mayor Orli de Cristo warned the population about the risks of landslides, the conditions of the roads and the difficulties faced by families living in rural areas.
According to the mayor, the biggest damages occurred between Friday (23) and Sunday (25), especially during Saturday (24). The most affected regions are located in the northern part of the municipality, including the communities of São Roque, Rio dos Índios, Chapada, Guabiroba and Linha Silvina.
According to Orli de Cristo, the large volume of water caused water holes to overflow, caused flooding and destroyed structures used for the passage of vehicles. At some points, the force of the flooding dragged down entire gutters, compromising the roads and leaving families temporarily isolated.
“All the holes overflowed, they flooded. Some were crumbled, dragged by the rains. There was a place that was without a hole, leaving even some families banned,” the mayor reported.
The landslides leave Serra da Barra Vermelha at risk
One of the most worrying situations was recorded in the Serra da Barra Vermelha, where landslides compromised the safety of the road and made it difficult for residents to move.
According to Orli de Cristo, part of the machinery of the Prefecture worked during Sunday (25) to clear the passage. However, the stretch continues to present risks due to the instability of the terrain. The force of the collapse also dragged a line of poles.
The mayor said that, given the current conditions, the mountain should be banned. However, the high level of the river prevents residents from using an alternative route to reach the community.
“This is a place that is very dangerous. Of course, the Serra da Barra Vermelha had to be banned. Even the line of poles was dragged by the collapse,” Orli said.
Given the situation, the mayor directed the residents to redouble their attention as they passed through the region and, mainly, not to remain standing on the stretch hit by the landslides.
Mayor Warns Drivers of Flooded Bridges and Roads
During the speech, Orli de Cristo also called for caution to drivers who need to use the rural roads of the municipality, especially during periods of heavy rain.
The main recommendation is not to try to cross rivers or flood points when the water is passing over bridges and gutters, due to the risk of the current dragging vehicles and people.
The mayor also mentioned problems on the state highway that serves Ivaí, where some sections have holes and deterioration of the pavement.
According to him, the municipal administration has already sent several offices to the Department of Roads of Roads (DER) requesting measures to improve the conditions of the road.
Orli said that the City Hall is also preparing the necessary documentation to refer to the Defesa Civil organs, with the aim of registering the damage and seeking support for the recovery of the affected structures.
Smokers receive warning of risks during harvesting
Another point highlighted by the mayor was the concern with farmers who work in the smoking industry, an important activity for several families in the municipality.
Orli de Cristo warned that the combination of heavy rainfall, soaked soil and steep terrain could increase the risk of accidents during smoke harvesting.
To reinforce the request for care, the mayor recalled the death of a rural worker that occurred approximately two years ago, during agricultural activity in wet soil conditions.
“Two years ago we lost a working man, a new man, in the harvest of smoke. A man who had his whole life ahead of him, unfortunately, lost his life in an accident, in a fatality.”
The head of the Executive also mentioned the possibility of a period with frequent rains, associating this forecast to the phenomenon El Niño. In view of this, he called for rural producers to have increased attention during activities in the field, especially in areas of greater declination.
The city seeks resources to recover damage from the rain.
With the losses caused by the storms, the City of Ivaí initiated joints to obtain resources destined to the recovery of roads, drains and other damaged structures.
Orli de Cristo reported that he has already contacted deputies to present the situation faced by the municipality and request financial support for the reconstruction work.
“I spoke with our members yesterday as well. We are working to get help for our municipality, so that we can fix all these damages,” he said.
The municipal administration also works on the preparation of documents for Defesa Civil, which can assist in the collection of losses and the forwarding of support requests.
At the time of the statement, no total amount of damage had been reported nor a deadline for the complete recovery of the affected areas.
In the meantime, Mayor Orli de Cristo reinforced the request for the population to avoid situations of risk, especially on rural roads, on slopes with the possibility of slipping and on river crossings during periods of intense rain.
