Strong rains cause Rio Iapó to overflow and flood houses in Castro

The Iapó River overflows in Castro on Sunday (13) after the sequence of heavy rains recorded in recent days in the municipality. In the Prainha region, the water level rose and reached homes near the river. The Maracanã River also overflowed, while roads in the rural area have points affected by excess rainfall.

Images recorded by the journalist Matheus Lara show the significant elevation of the level of the rivers and help to dimension the impacts caused by the rains in different regions of Castro. At points near the Japó River, water advanced over normally dry areas and reached near real estate.

Residences are affected in the Prainha region

In the Prainha region, one of the areas near the Iapó River, there were flood points after the overflow. Some homes were hit by water.

The increase in the volume of the rivers occurs after several days with favorable rainy conditions in Castro. For this Sunday (13), the Simepar forecast indicated 27.1 millimeters of accumulated rainfall and 98% probability of rainfall occurring in the municipality.

In addition to the Iapó River, residents also recorded the overflow of the Maracanã River, extending the impacts in different points of the municipality.

Rural roads are also affected.

The rains also affect the rural area of Castro. Roads have stretches impaired by excess water, making it difficult for residents and vehicles to move.

The situation demands attention especially in regions with bridges, streams and waterways close to the roads. With soaked soil and elevated rivers, conditions can quickly change if new rainfall is recorded.

The guidance is that drivers and residents do not try to cross places taken by water, especially when it is not possible to identify the depth of the stretch or the intensity of the current.

Images show how the points hit by the overflowing of the rivers in Castro were. The records include areas close to the residences, banks of the Iapó River and stretches affected by the rains.

The Simepar still maintains rain forecast for Castro on Monday (14), although with a volume lower than expected for Sunday.
