SUS to offer weight loss pens to obesity patients

Drugs of the class of GLP receptor agonists 1, popularly known as slimming pens, will be distributed via the Single Health System (SUS) to patients with obesity. The offer, according to the Ministry of Health, will be made based on studies and the definition of a clinical protocol.

In a note, the folder evaluated as positive the first results observed in obese patients of the Hospital Group Conceição, of the public network of Porto Alegre, selected since June to make use of semaglutide, one of the active principles of slimming pens.

“The goal is to ensure greater safety for participants [of the study] and establish guidelines for continuous follow-up by medical specialists of the unit. In all, 250 SUS patients treated by the hospital with severe obesity or associated with other morbidities will be followed up,” the ministry said.

Among the situations evaluated by the study are patients in line for bariatric surgery. The proposal is to understand if the use of medication is able to control the obesity situation so that surgery is no longer necessary. Other issues analyzed are the reduction of heart problems and the recurrence of breast cancer.
