"Terra derrubou parede e caiu sobre cama", reports firefighter on tragedy in PG

The landslide on Ponta Grossa that hit a residence in the Ronda region on Thursday morning caused a large amount of dirt and concrete to tear down the wall of a room and fall directly on three people who were in a bed. The report was made by Captain Bacuri, of the Fire Department, during an interview with BnT Online still at the site of the occurrence.

According to the captain, the firefighters were activated around 8:40 a.m. to initially attend an occurrence of landslide in a residence located in a hillside area.

“A residence in a hillside region, the land next to the residence ended up giving way, knocking down the wall and ended up hitting one of the beds of the residence,” Bacuri explained.

Earth and concrete buried room

According to the officer, the force of the slide caused the room to be taken over by land, mud and parts of the structure of the house itself.

“The whole room was buried with a piece of dirt and concrete that fell over three people who were in a bed,” he said.

The teams had to do a delicate job to get to the victims. According to Bacuri, it was necessary to remove mud and dirt and also make room for the affected structure. “We had to remove a portion of mud and earth that was there, open a space, removing the wall too, to be able to remove them,” he said.

By the time the interview was granted, the three victims had already been removed and were under the care of the medical teams of the Mobile Emergency Service (Samu). At that moment, the captain informed that the situation was considered serious, but stressed that the confirmation of the clinical picture would be up to the doctors.

Later, the deaths of the three people affected by the slide were confirmed — two adults and a child. The tragedy occurred on Republic Street in Panama, in the Ronda region.

Firefighters warn of new landslides

In addition to the rescue work, the concern of the teams has become the security of nearby residences.

According to Captain Bacuri, the property is in a ravine area and the large volume of accumulated rain increases the risk of new land movements. “It is a hillside region and, due to the accumulation of rain, can cause new collapses. The soil becomes saturated with water,” he explained.

The Defesa Civil was also mobilized and began an evaluation both in the affected residence and in nearby properties. “Defesa Civil is conducting a survey of the affected house and other nearby houses to see if there is a need to ban any other residence,” the captain said.

Ponta Grossa is experiencing a period of heavy rain since Wednesday (9). The conditions of the terrain and the amount of mud also made it difficult for emergency teams to access and work during the care.

The case mobilized the Fire Department, Samu and Defesa Civil and continues to be monitored by the authorities.
