Tornado forms between Ponta Grossa and Carambeí and scares residents; Simepar speaks out

A tornado was recorded around noon on Thursday (1st), between Ponta Grossa and Carambeí, on the Campos Gerais. After analyzing the characteristics of the occurrence, the Paraná Environmental Technology and Monitoring System (Simepar) reported that the phenomenon can be classified as a tornado of the landspout type.
According to the organ, the episode had a short duration and low intensity. The classification given by Simepar describes a different formation from that associated with tornadoes produced by supercell-type storms.
How does this type of tornado form?
The landspout develops from an air circulation close to the surface. Small swirls near the ground can give rise to a spinning column of air that extends toward the base of a cloud. Although the appearance may resemble that of other tornadoes, the difference lies in the process of formation.
In this case, the phenomenon is not associated with a supercell, a type of storm that presents an upward air current in rotation. According to the information attributed to Simepar, the landspout tends to have lower intensity and more limited destruction potential compared to more intense tornadoes.
Simepar did not assign a Fujita rating
For the episode recorded between Ponta Grossa and Carambeí, Simepar did not assign a classification on the Fujita scale, used to estimate the intensity of tornadoes from the damage caused. The evaluation published on this occurrence points, therefore, to a brief and low intensity phenomenon.
