Anvisa orders recall of protein drink and bans sale nationwide

The National Agency of Vigilância Sanitária (Anvisa) on Wednesday ordered the collection of all batches of a protein drink marketed in Brazil. The measure also prohibits the manufacture, sale, distribution and advertising of the products affected by the decision.

The determination involves the NotShake Protein drinks, manufactured by NotCo Brazil. According to Anvisa, the products were not notified as dietary supplements within the deadline provided by the transitional rules of the sector regulation, closed on September 1, 2026.

In addition to the issue involving regularization, the agency pointed to other problems that grounded the decision.

Anvisa points to problems in the studies presented

According to the regulatory body, the studies presented by the company were considered insufficient to demonstrate that the beverage maintains its characteristics throughout the period of validity informed to the consumer. Anvisa also cited the use of the term “zero lactose” in products.

Another point highlighted by the agency is the presence of concentrated cabbage juice in the composition of the drink. According to Anvisa, it would not have been demonstrated that the required safety requirements for this ingredient were met within the category of dietary supplements.

Product rating was also questioned

The agency also said there was an inadequate reclassification of beverages as plant-based protein foods. For Anvisa, the characteristics of the products indicate the purpose of supplementation of proteins, vitamins, minerals and fibers, which requires compliance with the specific standards applicable to dietary supplements.

With determination, all lots hit by the decision must be collected, while manufacturing, marketing, distribution and advertising remain prohibited. According to the material released on Wednesday, the company responsible had been sought to express itself about the decision, but had not yet submitted a position until the publication of the information.
