The Brazilian government has sent a shipment of medicines to Ukraine, aimed at patients with chronic and autoimmune diseases. The inputs were received by the Department of Health of the city of Uzorodo, in the province of Transcarpathia, according to a statement from the Brazilian embassy in the country. The humanitarian action takes place at a time of delicate diplomatic relations between the two nations.

According to the diplomatic representation, the delivery aims to help patients with progressive secondary forms of diseases, adults with severe secondary rheumatoid arthritis and children and adolescents with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. The initiative reinforces the Brazilian commitment to humanitarian support for the Ukrainian population affected by the conflict.

The statement from the embassy highlights that the medicines are aimed at specific and serious health conditions. Among the beneficiaries are patients with progressive forms of disease, adults with severe rheumatoid arthritis and young people with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. The choice of items reflects the need for continuous support for long-term treatments.

“The delivery of these drugs aims to help patients with progressive secondary forms of disease, as well as adults with severe secondary rheumatoid arthritis and children and adolescents with juvenile idiopathic arthritis,” the statement said. The action was coordinated by the Brazilian embassy in Ukraine, which reinforced the humanitarian nature of the donation.

According to the diplomatic representation, “this gesture demonstrates the unwavering commitment” of Brazil to humanitarian support for Ukrainians. The delivery in Uzorodo is another chapter of the assistance that Brazil has been providing since the beginning of the war.

History of Brazilian aid to Ukraine

In 2022, months after the conflict began, Brazil sent more than 11.6 tons of supplies and medicines to Ukraine. The new remittance gives continuity to this effort, even in the face of political divergences between governments. Humanitarian aid has been a constant in bilateral relations, despite diplomatic turmoil.

The source did not detail the value or exact quantity of the medicines shipped now. No information was released about the transport logistics or the cost of the operation. The focus of the statement was the social impact of the donation for Ukrainian patients.

Diplomatic tensions between Brazil and Ukraine

Despite the new shipment of humanitarian aid, the relationship between the two countries has faced recent problems due to President Lula’s positions on the war in Europe. Ever since he resumed the presidency, he has made controversial statements about the conflict, and has even claimed that the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, was as responsible for the war as the Russian leader, Vladimir Putin.

The position of the Brazilian came to be interpreted by the Ukrainian government as pro-Russia, and generated disagreements with Zelensky. Last year, for example, the president of Ukraine refused to talk to the petista by phone before a trip of Lula to Russia. The incident highlighted the distancing between the leaders.

Amid the differences, the Ukrainian government chose not to nominate a new ambassador to Brazil after Andriy Melnyk left the post. The diplomat left the head of the Ukrainian representation in mid-April 2025 to take up a position at the United Nations (UN). The vacancy in office reflects the current state of bilateral relations.

Friendly meetings at international events

Lula and Zelensky, however, had friendly meetings and talked about the war at international events such as the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025 and the G7 summit in June this year. In those moments, the leaders exchanged views on the conflict and possible paths to peace, despite public differences.

The meetings demonstrate that, even with tensions, the channels of dialogue remain open in multilateral forums. Brazilian humanitarian aid, like the delivery of medicines, can be seen as a concrete gesture of solidarity that transcends political differences. The continuity of this support will depend on the evolution of relations between the two governments.

For the Ukrainian patients who will receive the medicines, the donation represents immediate relief and hope amid the humanitarian crisis. The gesture reinforces the Brazilian tradition of international cooperation in health, even in complex geopolitical contexts.
