Cambalache: The nearly 100-year-old song that remains relevant... by John Elvis
Cambalache and the 2026 elections meet in John Elvis's reflection on Raul Seixas, information, consciousness and responsibility before voting.

Raul Seixas was never just a singer.
Raul was a provocation.
Maybe that’s why “Cambalache” found the right voice in him.
The music was born in Argentina in 1934, by the hands of Enrique Santos Discépolo. Raul recorded it in 1987. And almost four decades later, it still seems written for our time.
Because Raul had a rare characteristic: he did not deliver ready answers. I'd deliver questions.
“Cambalah” is one of them.
The music speaks of a world where values blend, where right and wrong seem to compete in the same space.
And then we get to this Sunday.
Election day.
It is precisely here that Raul ceases to be just a soundtrack and becomes a reflection.
Raul Seixas liked to question established truths. It didn't match much with canned thinking. His work has always had a certain rebelliousness against those who wanted to tell the individual what he should think.
And maybe this is the big message for Sunday:
Think with your own head.
Before you vote, research.
Look at proposals.
Look at trajectories.
Look at contradictions.
Be wary of easy promises —even those that confirm exactly what you would like to hear.
Because today we're living in a different kind of drummer.
The lie may seem true.
The show may seem political.
Popularity may seem like competence.
And a few seconds video can try to decide a choice that will have consequences for years to come.
Raul would probably ask, “What about you? Are you thinking or just following the crowd?”
We don’t have to agree with Raul at all to recognize the strength of his provocation.
He wanted freedom.
Freedom to think.
To question.
To disagree.
Not to accept the world simply because someone said it was so.
And perhaps that is precisely what a democracy demands of each of us.
This Sunday, no one needs to think the same.
No one needs to vote the same.
But they all have one thing in common:
Responsibility for your own choice.
The urn shouldn't be a cheerleader's room.
It should be a place of conscience.
Raul died in 1989, but some of his questions are still alive.
And “Cambalache” may be one of them.
A song from 1934.
A recording from 1987.
A reflection for 2026.
Because the world changes.
Politicians change (little, but they change they can’t win time).
The speeches change (although they sound very repetitive and similar).
But one thing remains indispensable:
Think before choosing.
And maybe, on Sunday, to hear Raul is exactly this:
to lower the volume of the noise...
and increase the volume of consciousness.
THINK BEM...
The power is rarely in your hands
