Cataratas do Iguaçu have flow above 11 million liters per second after rains in Paraná
Flow of Cataratas do Iguaçu exceeds 11 million liters per second after heavy rains in Paraná. See the situation of visitation.

The heavy rains recorded in recent days in the Paraná caused an expressive increase in the flow of the Iguaçu Falls, in Foz do Iguaçu, in the west of the state. On Tuesday, the volume of water remains above 11 million liters per second, leaving the set of falls with a much higher force than normal.
According to Simepar’s update at 2 p.m., the flow of the Falls was close to 11,500 cubic meters per second, the equivalent of approximately 11.5 million liters of water per second. The historical average of the attraction is about 1.5 million liters per second.
This means that the volume recorded on Tuesday is approximately 7.6 times above the historical average.
The increase occurred quickly. According to Simepar, since Sunday (11) the flow has practically doubled. In the region of Foz do Iguaçu, the accumulated rainfall between Monday (12) and Tuesday approaches 150 millimeters, and new areas of instability were still forming during the afternoon.
Biggest flow of 2026
Data released by the dealership Urbia+Cataratas point out that the largest volume recorded so far this year occurred on the morning of Monday (12), when the Falls reached 11.8 million liters per second. On Tuesday, the dealership also recorded measurements of 10.5 million liters per second over the course of the day.
The variation occurs as the water advances through the basin of Rio Iguaçu and the intensity of rainfall in different regions of Paraná.
By Sunday, when the flow reached about 8.8 million liters per second, the administration of the Iguazu National Park had already triggered special security protocols.
Walkway remains prohibited
One of the main effects of the flood is the preventive interdiction of the walkway that brings visitors closer to the Devil’s Gorge, one of the best-known areas of the Falls.
Urbia+Cataratas reported that, during periods of high flow, specific security measures are adopted. Among them is the preventive removal of gates from the catwalk to allow the passage of water and reduce the pressure on the structure.
Other paths, such as Poço Preto and Bananeiras, also had accesses suspended due to the conditions of the river. Some of the National Park's indoor attractions have been subjected to temporary restrictions.
Despite the bans, the Iguazu National Park is not closed. Visitation continues in areas considered safe, including points of the Waterfall Trail and viewpoints that allow you to follow the spectacle caused by the exceptional volume of water.
Rivers are monitored
The flooding is not limited to the area of the falls. Itaipu Binacional reported on Tuesday that it maintains permanent monitoring of the Iguaçu and Paraná rivers, which have been showing rapid elevation as a result of heavy rains.
In Foz do Iguaçu, areas near the river Paraná are also being monitored by the Defesa Civil. Until the most recent update, the forecasts did not indicate that the river would reach the level considered sufficient to affect residences of monitored areas of the municipality.
The trend of the flow of the Falls will mainly depend on the behavior of the rains in the Rio Iguaçu basin in the coming hours. The Simepar pointed on Tuesday to the continuity of instability in different regions of the Paraná.
