Democratas question the role of Trump in Flávio's escape
Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives sent a letter to the State Department questioning possible assistance in Senator Flávio Bolsonaro's trip to the United States. The document requests responses by November 13, 2026.

Democrats in the House of Representatives of the Estados Unidos sent a letter to the State Department asking whether the U.S. government would have facilitated Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ)’s trip to the country, despite a Brazilian court order banning him from leaving Brazil. The document, obtained by the press, asks for written answers by November 13, 2026, and also requests an information meeting with congressional advisers within the same deadline.
The move comes amid reports in the U.S. press that the Trump administration would have paid for the private jet flight that took Flavio and his family to Florida. The senator is the subject of investigations in Brazil and had his documents seized by the Federal Police, in addition to being prohibited from leaving the country by judicial decision.
Questions about diplomatic assistance
These events raise important questions about the decision-making process of the State Department, its knowledge of the Brazilian judicial order and the possibility that officials of the Estados Unidos government have provided assistance before or after the issuance of that order.
The central question is simple: did the State Department, the Embassy of the Estados Unidos in Brasilia or any other body of the US government help Senator Bolsonaro to travel to the Estados Unidos or to enter the country, despite the Brazilian judicial restriction on his departure?
The Democrats stress that, if such assistance occurred, “Congress needs to understand what kind of aid was provided, who authorized it, when it occurred, and what information was available to U.S. authorities at the time.”

List of detailed questions
The document contains a number of specific questions, including whether any U.S. government authority received, examined or discussed a copy of the court decision prior to the alleged departure of the senator from Brazil. It also asks whether the State Department has verified whether Flávio Bolsonaro had legal authorization to leave the country before authorizing or facilitating any visa or travel-related arrangement.
Another point addressed is whether the Department knew that the senator had allegedly breached the deadline set by the Justice to deliver his passports and, if so, when he became aware and what measures were taken. Parliamentarians also question whether the body issued, approved, accelerated, renewed, or in any way facilitated the granting of visas to the senator or any member of his family during the election period.
In addition, the office mentions reports that a senior State Department official declared that the body would grant visas to the senator and his family members and allow him to enter the Estados Unidos. Democrats ask who authorized this decision.
Legal basis and regional coordination
The questions also include whether the visas were approved or other immigration measures were taken before the Department became aware of the Brazilian judicial decision and, if so, whether it reconsidered, suspended or reassessed those measures afterwards. Another question is whether the Department consulted the Department of Justice or any other federal body about the implications of facilitating the entry of a foreign political figure who allegedly left his country in violation of a court order.
The office also inquires if the Department has received any requests from Brazilian authorities related to the location of the senator, the situation of his trip or the possible entry into the Estados Unidos and, if so, how he responded. The Democrats also ask for the legal basis for issuing or approving visas to the senator and his family members, including visa categories and eligibility criteria considered, and whether the Department has assessed ongoing criminal investigations involving the senator in making that decision.
Finally, they question whether any government authority of the Estados Unidos crowded in Argentina or Ecuador coordinated with the senator his travel itinerary.
Transparency and supervision
“The American people and Congress have a legitimate interest in exercising their oversight function to understand whether diplomatic and immigration resources of the Estados Unidos were used to facilitate the travel of a foreign political figure in these circumstances.”
They add that “transparency is particularly important when the events reported involve a foreign judicial process, sensitive bilateral relations and the consistent application of the Estados Unidos’s migration and diplomatic policies.” It ends with the phrase, “We await a quick and complete response.”
