Democrats advance in Republican territories in the U.S.

The Democratic Party has secured a majority in the House of Representatives and is halfway to taking control of the Senate after surprising victories in Republican states. High voter participation from Black and Hispanic voters drove the results.

The Democratic Party achieved a historic night in the midterm elections in the Estados Unidos, gaining control of the House of Representatives and moving forward to take over the Senate as well. Results in traditionally Republican states surprised analysts and redefined the country’s political map.

Surprising victory in South Carolina

One of the first big surprises came from the Senate in South Carolina, where Democrat Annie Andrews defeated Darline Graham. Graham had been nominated for the job after the death of her brother, Senator Lindsey Graham. Andrews’ victory was driven by a significantly better performance than Kamala Harris’s in the 2024 presidential election in black-majority counties.

With this achievement, the Democrats secured a chair that previously seemed out of reach. The source did not detail the exact margin of victory, but the result was classified as historical.

North Carolina and Georgia Consolidate Advance

In North Carolina, former Democratic governor Roy Cooper defeated veteran Republican Michael Whatley in a bid for an open seat in the Senate. This was the first of four victories needed for Democrats to take control of the House. With South Carolina guaranteed, the party has already come halfway through.

In Georgia, the re-election of Jon Ossoff, who a year ago was considered a tough one, ended up becoming an easy victory. Both disputes were seen as competitive, but the Democrats managed to broaden their electoral base.

Beware if you turn to Texas, Kansas and Ohio

Attention now focuses on counting votes in the Republican-occupied Senate seats in Texas, Kansas and Ohio. CBS News, a partner of the BBC in the US, classifies the disputes in Texas and Kansas as favorable to the Democrats.

In Texas, the race for governor, where until last year Republican Governor Greg Abbott was the absolute favorite, is now considered indefinite. These results could further expand the Democratic edge in the Senate.

Majority in the House for the first time since 2022

Democrats won a majority in the House of Representatives for the first time since 2022. The party won seats that were open in western North Carolina and Kentucky, and appears to be in a good position to make gains in Virginia and Indiana.

This advance comes despite Republican attempts to redesign electoral districts. In Florida, for example, the state legislature altered the boundaries of three Democrat-occupied districts to facilitate the Republican victory, but the Democrats still managed to win back Hispanic voters in the state.

High participation of minorities boosts Democrats

The Democratic success is attributed to the high turnout of black voters in the South and the recapture of Hispanic voters in Florida, who had supported Republicans only two years ago. In Miami-Dade County, which Trump won in 2024, Democratic candidates are back in the lead.

This demographic change was decisive in several disputes. The source did not detail the exact numbers of participation, but highlighted the impact of these groups.

Florida: Isolated Positive for Republicans

Despite the overall unfavorable scenario, Florida may prove to be one of the few positives for Republicans. Senator Ashley Moody won re-election by a small margin, as did Rep. Byron Donalds in his candidacy for government.

These results show that the state still retains some Republican strength, but have not been enough to contain the Democratic wave at the national level.

With vote counts still underway in key states, the U.S. political landscape may undergo new twists. The Boca no Trombone Portal will continue to follow the developments and will bring updates once new results are confirmed.
