Do you take care of the house? See how to contribute to INSS and guarantee retirement rights
Dependents of the insured may also have rights to a death pension and to the assistance for confinement

People who are exclusively engaged in domestic services in their own residence and belong to low-income families can contribute to the National Social Security Institute (INSS) by paying a reduced rate of only 5% of the minimum wage.
The modality, known as the low-income optional insured, was created to facilitate access to Social Security for those who do not have their own income and do not exercise paid activity.
Based on the minimum wage of R$ 1,621, the monthly amount of the contribution in 2026 is R$ 81.05. Payment can be made through the Social Security Guide (GPS) or contribution card.
But beware: it is not enough to be a housewife to be entitled to reduced collection. It is necessary to comply with a series of requirements established by the INSS.
Who can contribute only 5%?
To participate in this modality, the person must simultaneously meet the following requirements:
Not owning own income, including rent, alimony and death pension;
not to engage in any remunerated activity;
Dedicate themselves exclusively to domestic work in their own residence;
Belonging to a family with a monthly income of up to two minimum wages;
Be registered in the Single Register for Social Programs (Cadúnico), with the data updated in the last two years.
The registration or update of the Cadúnico must be made at the Social Assistance Reference Center (CRAS) of the municipality.
What benefits does INSS offer?
Those who contribute correctly and have the collections recognized by the INSS can have access to different pension benefits.
Among them are:
Retirement by age;
Retirement for permanent disability;
Temporary disability aid, former sickness aid;
Maternity salary.
Dependents of the insured person may also be entitled to death pension and detention assistance, provided that the criteria required for each benefit are met.
Attention: Domestic work does not guarantee retirement automatically
An important point is that performing the services of your own home, without receiving remuneration, does not automatically guarantee social security protection.
To have access to the benefits, it is necessary to make the proper registration and keep the contributions up to date.
INSS also needs to validate the payments. If the person collects the 5% without meeting all the requirements, the values may not be recognized as valid contributions in this category.
Therefore, it is important to check the family situation, the registration in the Cadúnico and the other requirements before starting to pay.
Who doesn’t fall into the low-income category?
Housewives who do not meet the criteria of the 5% contribution, especially those who belong to families with incomes above the allowed limit, can also contribute to Social Security by other modalities.
One of the alternatives is the simplified plan, whose contribution corresponds to 11% of the minimum wage. In this case, it is not necessary to be registered in Cadúnico or to prove low income. The person, however, cannot exercise paid activity that frames him as a compulsory insured.
Another possibility is the normal plan, with a contribution of 20% on a value chosen between the minimum wage and the pension ceiling. In this model, the monthly payment varies depending on the calculation basis selected.
It is important to remember that the 5% and 11% plans have limitations. In order to use these contributions in certain forms of retirement by contribution time or to obtain the Contribution Time Certificate (CTC), it may be necessary to supplement the amounts collected, in accordance with the social security rules.
How to start paying the INSS?
Those who wish to contribute as a low-income voluntary insurer should follow a few steps:
Check if you already have registration in the INSS. The consultation can be made through the application or website My INSS or by phone 135.
Check if you are registered in Cadúnico and if the data is up to date.
Issue monthly Social Security Guide (GPS) to carry out the collection.
It is also possible to use a contribution card, found in stationery. In this case, the 1929 code must be informed, corresponding to the monthly contribution of the optional low-income insured.
Payment must be made by the 15th day of the month following that of the jurisdiction. When the date does not have a bank account, the maturity is changed to the next working day.
CRAS can help in orientation
Those who do not yet have registration in CadÚnico or need to update the information can search the CRAS of the city to receive guidance.
It is worth noting that being registered in Cadúnico, by itself, does not guarantee the automatic framing in the category of optional low-income insured. All requirements must be met.
Another recommendation is to keep proof of payment and regularly monitor the status of contributions.
In case of doubt, the citizen can consult the application My INSS, access the official portal of Social Security or contact by phone 135. (The information is from the Gov. Agency)
