Doctor from Ponta Grossa performs over 400 free consultations during humanitarian mission in Angola and receives honor from the Municipal Council

Núbia da Silva Nascimento, a doctor and surgeon from Ponta Grossa, was honored by Câmara Municipal de Ponta Grossa on Wednesday (28), after participating in a humanitarian mission in Africa. During a week of volunteer work, the professional carried out more than 400 free cares in the province of Calenga, located about 600 kilometers from Luanda, capital of Angola.
The tribute was given through a motion of applause, proposed by the councilor Dr. Erick, in recognition of the humanitarian work developed by the doctor in September of this year.
Natural of Ponta Grossa, Nubia is the first doctor of a large Silva family, with roots in Vila Ana Rita, in Uvaranas. Graduated in Medicine from the State University of the West of Paraná (Unioeste), in 2009, the professional has specializations in general, vascular and endovascular surgery, as well as a doctorate in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the State University of Ponta Grossa (UEPG).
Humanitarian mission brought assistance to needy communities
The mission in Angola was organized by a group of volunteers formed mostly by Brazilian women, including professionals in the areas of health, education and other sectors.
In addition to offering their services free of charge, the participants paid for their own travel expenses to bring assistance to communities with difficulties in accessing basic services.
During the mission, Nubia attended patients of different age groups, many of whom had to walk for hours to get a medical consultation.
“People smiled a lot at me, the kids wanted to touch my hair. They came from far away places, often after hours of walking, fasting, waiting for an appointment, a diagnosis or simply for someone who could hear them and validate their complaints,” she said.
Even in the face of great demand and limitations of time and resources, the team sought to offer individualized care to each patient.
“The number of patients was much greater than the time and resources available, but despite this, everyone came out with medication and a hug, a handshake, a ‘God bless you and the angel keep you,’” Nubia said.
Care for pregnant women marked the experience
Among the most exciting moments of the mission, the doctor highlighted the care of pregnant women. During the consultations, she performed ultrasound tests that allowed pregnant women to monitor the health of the babies.
“What I liked the most was taking care of the pregnant women. I was extremely happy to remember the routine of the obstetric exam and to see the joy of a mom when I ultrasounded the baby and she knew the child was well.”
For Nubia, the experience represented much more than performing medical procedures. The contact with the Angolan population reinforced the importance of welcoming, empathy and humanized care.
Recognition in Ponta Grossa
Upon receiving the tribute of the Ponta Grosso Legislative, the surgeon thanked the recognition and highlighted the lessons she brought from the experience on the African continent.
“I am happy and grateful for the recognition. I came back from this journey even more convinced of my values and I think that everyone, absolutely all human beings deserve to be happy, heard, seen. That's taking care of. To take care is to look at the next and the next wants to be seen,” he said.
The tribute recognizes not only the more than 400 cares performed in Angola, but also the commitment of the doctor from Ponta Grossa to use her professional knowledge to bring assistance and dignity to people in situations of vulnerability.
