After almost 90 days in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), André Bonfim, who suffered a serious electric motorcycle accident on August 7, shows signs of recovery and may be about to return home. However, the family faces a new challenge: to obtain resources to adapt the residence and ensure the necessary care after hospital discharge.

To cover part of the expenses, the family members launched the solidarity campaign “Juntos pelo André Bonfim”, which seeks to raise approximately R$ 35,000. The amount will be used to purchase hospital equipment, materials of continuous use, accessibility adaptations and treatments essential for the continuity of recovery.

André shows improvement after almost three months in the ICU

Since the accident, André remains in hospital and has faced a delicate period of recovery. According to his uncle, Jonathan Bonfim, for about half of that time, the nephew remained unconscious.

Although he showed signs of awakening, André has not yet fully regained consciousness. However, the progress made in recent weeks has renewed the hope of the families.

Currently, he can breathe alone, without the aid of mechanical ventilation, and presents subtle responses to some commands. In the last week, he also went through the replacement of the tracheostomy by a metal cannula and the change of the feeding probe.

André is expected to be transferred from the ICU to a hospital room later this week. If it continues to show favorable developments, it may receive a discharge in the coming days.

Family Needs $35,000 to Prepare for Home

With the possibility of returning home, family members began a mobilization to ensure that André has an adequate structure to continue the treatment.

Among the main needs are the adaptation of the residence for accessibility, the acquisition of a wheelchair, a bath chair, a hospital bed, hospital materials and follow-up with physiotherapy and speech therapy.

André’s mother, Evelise, had to leave her job to dedicate herself entirely to the care of her son. Since the accident, she has remained by his side, monitoring his recovery daily.

According to his father, Diego Bonfim dos Santos, the family is seeking help from the City Hall and by other means. However, even considering these possible aids, the estimate is approximately R$ 35,000 in expenses that will be under the responsibility of family members in the first three months after discharge.

Uncle Andrew calls for solidarity

In contact with BnT Online, Jonathan Bonfim explained that the family is mobilizing friends, acquaintances and the community to get the necessary resources.

“We are working hard to ease this situation. It will need a series of adaptations in the home, hospital bed, equipment and many materials that will be used daily,” he said.

The uncle also explained that the family members chose to receive the contributions directly from Pix, avoiding the fees charged by crowdfunding platforms.

To ensure transparency, all donations and expenses will be recorded in spreadsheets, with tax notes and photographs of the purchased materials. The intention is to present an accountability to the people who contribute.

“We want to make a transparent process. We’re writing everything down, saving the tax notes and the photos to account to all the people who help us,” Jonathan said.
