Flávio confirms presence in Band debate with Lula
Flávio Bolsonaro backed down and confirmed participation in the Band debate with Lula next Sunday. The clash will be the first between the candidates in the second round. Lula had already confirmed his participation and demanded his opponent's presence.
The candidate Flávio Bolsonaro (PL) confirmed on Wednesday (14) that he will participate in the presidential debate of the Band next Sunday (16), reversing the position announced the day before. The decision was communicated in a video released on social networks, in which the senator defied the opponent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and stated that he will be present to “rub the truth in his face”.
On Tuesday (13), after visiting his father, Jair Bolsonaro (PL), in Brasilia, Flavio had ruled out presence in the confrontation. “I’m not going, this debate is not scheduled for Sunday,” he told reporters at the time. The change of posture comes after Lula confirms participation in the event and publicly charges the presence of the rival.
Turn after Lula's provocation
In a video, Flavio justified the turnaround as a strategy to force Lula to commit to the debate. “Lula, how predictable are you, huh? I just told you I wasn't going to the band's debate so you could tell me the next minute you're going to the debate. Of course I’ll go into the debate, I just wanted you to confirm,” he said.
The candidate of the PL also accused the petista of avoiding direct confrontations. “I will be there to rub the truth in your face. I will deny you live to millions of Brazilians. I’m waiting for you at the debate of the Band, Lula,” he added.
Before the senator’s change of position, Lula had already announced that he would attend the event. “Sunday I will be in the debate of Bandeirantes,” the president said in a video released by the broadcaster on social networks.
Band held event even without Flavio
The management of the Band even informed that it would maintain the event even if only Lula appeared, with the pulpit destined for Flávio empty. In this scenario, the president would be interviewed and questioned by journalists from the group of media outlets organized for the broadcast.
With the confirmation of the two candidates, the debate should mark the first direct confrontation between Lula and Flavio in this second round. Neither of them participated in debates during the first round of the presidential contest.
First meeting in the second round
The absence of debates in the first round generated criticism from voters and experts, who pointed to a lack of confrontation of proposals between the main candidates. Now, the meeting in the Band gains even greater weight because it is the first opportunity for the two to present their visions side by side.
In the October 4 vote, Flavio finished ahead of Lula, with 47.03% of the valid votes, against 45.16% of the petista, with a difference of just over two million votes. The tight result raises the expectation for debate, which can influence undecided voters.
