The former minister and PT candidate for the government of São Paulo, Fernando Haddad, stated on Monday (14), in an interview with SP1, that he never had contact with the former banker Daniel Vorcaro, central figure in the scandal involving the Banco Master. Haddad also defended the opening of investigations into the case before the elections and said that the judiciary "cannot leak information from the citizen".

The speech comes amid the electoral campaign, in which the petista tries to disassociate himself from any link with the financial scandal. Vorcaro, a former controller of Banco Master, is under investigation for alleged irregularities that rocked the market and gained national repercussions.

Haddad denies link and points right

During the interview, the candidate was emphatic in denying any personal or political relationship with Vorcaro. “He [Vorcaro] did not fund my campaign either. He financed the Tarcisius campaign, he financed the Jair Bolsonaro campaign. He has business with three former Bolsonaro ministers: Casa Civil, Ministry of Communications and Relações Institucionais,” Haddad said.

The petista took the opportunity to associate the scandal with right-wing politicians, citing directly the governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), his main competitor in the electoral dispute. In 2022, the former banker donated R$ 3 million to Bolsonaro’s presidential campaign and R$ 2 million to Tarcísio’s campaign, according to the data presented by the candidate.

Haddad stressed that he did not receive resources from Vorcaro and that the donations of the businessman benefited opponents. The strategy seeks to shift the debate to the opposite field, at a time when transparency about campaign funding is gaining prominence.

Transparency before the election

The former minister advocated that investigations into the case be made public before the elections and that the justice system leave the "people to take the course of the country". “The justice system cannot ignore the information of the citizen. Open up. Whoever has to answer, answer. Whoever has to pay for something, pay regardless of political party,” he said.

For Haddad, the opening of the secrets is essential for the voter to have clarity about the facts before going to the polls. Transparency billing arises in a context of mistrust about the performance of financial institutions and their relationship with public officials.

Criticisms of monetary policy

Asked about the evolution of the dívida pública and the conduct of economic policy, Haddad said that the reduction of debt necessarily involves a fall in interest rates. “Interests are not justified. The Banco Central is autonomous, but there is no justification for a 14% interest rate for an inflation rate of 4%," he said.

The petista also commented on the performance of the leaders of Banco Central, including Gabriel Galipolo, current president of the institution. Although the majority of the members of the Monetary Policy Committee were nominated by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), Haddad acknowledged that the directors have a mandate and independence to act. "After you indicate, the person has a mandate. She makes her head," he said.

Asked if Gabriel Galipolo’s nomination for the presidency of Banco Central is cause for regret, Haddad admitted dissatisfaction with the conduct of monetary policy. The declaration signals a distancing between the candidate and the current command of the BC, even though it was indicated by the government of which it was part.

Impact on the campaign

Haddad’s statements come at a turning point in the dispute by the São Paulo government. By denying ties to Vorcaro and charging transparency, the petista seeks to shield his candidacy from possible wear and tear. At the same time, he tries to transfer the wear to the opposing camp, citing donations to Bolsonaro and Tarcísio.

Criticism of interest policy also echoes among voters dissatisfied with the cost of credit and the performance of the economy. The frustration with Galipolo, however, can generate noises within the governmental base, since the current president of the BC was appointed by Lula with Haddad’s endorsement.

The Vorcaro case is still under investigation, and the opening of the secrecy may bring new developments. The source did not detail deadlines or next steps of the counts. Meanwhile, the electoral campaign intensifies the debate on transparency and accountability in public management.
