Lula government plans to cut posts from pro-Flávio parties

The Lula government is studying to cut positions and appointments from parties that declare support for Flávio Bolsonaro in the second round. The offensive, led by Minister José Guimarães, includes a "general clean-up" in public agencies and state structures. The president's allies demand a tough response after the adherence of Centrão parties to the opponent.

The government of President Lula intends to promote a cut of positions and nominations occupied by parties that announce support for Flávio Bolsonaro in the second round of the presidential elections. The measure was revealed by the chief minister of the Secretariat of Government, José Guimarães, in an interview with the newspaper O Globo published on Friday (9). The offensive comes after attempts by Lula’s allies to maintain the neutrality of the parties during the electoral contest.

Guimarães said he will do a survey of all the spaces occupied by the legends in the federal administration, including municipalities and state structures. The decision is a direct response to the acronyms of the Center to the opponent candidate. Allies of the president have begun to charge a tougher reaction to the political movement.

General cleanliness in positions and nominations

“If it depends on me, we will do a general clean-up on the positions and nominations. Whoever is with Lula has to be with Lula,” said Guimarães. The minister did not specify which parties will be targeted by the measure, but indicated that the uprising is already underway. The declaration signals a posture of zero tolerance with subtitles that support Flavio in the second round.

The action includes the revision of nominations in federal and state bodies, as pointed out by the minister. The clean-up is expected to reach positions of trust and strategic functions held by allies of the infidel acronyms. The source did not detail the schedule for the execution of the cuts.

Speech against the Center

In addition to administrative retaliation, the petist campaign intends to exploit the support of Centrão to Flavio to associate it with the traditional practices of politics. “We will radicalize the discourse against Flávio Bolsonaro and show that he is the candidate of the system because he added the old political practices and the old leaderships of the Centrão,” Guimarães said.

Earlier on social media, the minister criticized the alliance and accused the parties of seeking control of the public machine as a “mafia of power” in the service of Flávio Bolsonaro. The strategy seeks to wear down the image of the opponent before the electorate that rejects traditional politics.

Meeting with the mayor

On Thursday (8), the mayor, Hugo Motta, met with Lula in Brasilia. According to the president, Motta would have confirmed the support of the petista in this second round of the presidential election. “He’s going to help me win the election,” the president said.

The meeting takes place amid the government’s articulation to ensure the neutrality or support of Centrão parties. Motta's confirmation is seen as a trump card for Lula's campaign, but it does not remove the pressure on other subtitles.

Context and next steps

The government offensive reflects the tension in the second round, with the fierce dispute between Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro. The threat of cutting office is an attempt to contain the migration of parties to the adversary and preserve the allied base in Congress. The source did not detail whether the measure will be formalized by decree or by internal government decision.

The Guimarães survey includes indications in the federal administration and also considers spaces occupied by the legends in municipalities and state structures. With the accession of the parties to Flavio, allies of the president began to charge a harder reaction. The expectation is that the next few days will bring definitions about the cleanup targets.

For the voter, the backstage dispute may influence governability and the distribution of office in the next term.
