Paraná to test radars that calculate average speed; Ponta Grossa region is on the list
Paraná will test radars that calculate the average speed of vehicles. Sections in Carambeí and Tibagi, near Ponta Grossa, are on the list.

Drivers travelling on the Paraná motorways will find a new monitoring technology in the experimental phase. The National Land Transport Agency (ANTT) has authorized a pilot project to test radars capable of calculating the average speed of vehicles along certain stretches of roads.
The experiment will be carried out on highways granted to private initiative and includes points near Ponta Grossa. Among them are a section of the PR-151, in Carambeí, in the connection with Ponta Grossa, in addition to two segments of the BR-376 in Tibagi, one of them near the limit with the municipality of ponta-grossense.
The tests will have an initial duration of 180 days, counted from the effective deployment of the system. During this trial period, no fines will be applied based on the average speed measurement.
Road signs should also inform drivers about the existence of the new type of monitoring.
How the Medium Speed Radar Works
The model is different from conventional radars, which record the speed of the vehicle at the instant it passes through the equipment.
In the medium speed system, two monitoring points record the passage of the same vehicle. From the time used to travel the distance between these locations, the system calculates the average speed developed on that stretch.
In practice, the objective is to identify if the driver has maintained a speed compatible with the limit established throughout the route, and not only at the point where there is a radar.
The model seeks to avoid a common situation on the highways: the driver reduces the speed when approaching an inspection equipment and returns to acceleration soon after passing it.
Project will be evaluated for six months
The authorization of ANTT is provisional and experimental. The pilot project includes highways in eight Brazilian states and will allow to evaluate the operation of the technology in real traffic conditions.
Among the aspects that will be analyzed are the reliability of the information obtained by the equipment, the operational performance of the system and the behavior of the road users.
In the Paraná, excerpts administered by the PRVias dealers, EPR Paraná, EPR Iguaçu and EPR Litoral Pioneiro participate in the project.
The companies must send the results of the tests to the Superintendence of Road Infrastructure (Surod) on a monthly basis.
A possible definitive implementation of average speed surveillance, including the possibility of applying fines, will still depend on new technical, regulatory and legal analyses.
Extracts close to Ponta Grossa
In the Campos Gerais region, three points draw attention.
On the PR-151, the system will be tested between kilometers 306 and 315, in the ascending direction, at Carambeí. It is nine kilometers in a connecting stretch with Ponta Grossa.
On BR-376, one of the tests will take place between kilometers 430 and 435, at Tibagi, in a five-kilometre segment.
Another point of the same highway is between kilometers 441 and 446, also on Tibagi and near the limit with Ponta Grossa. According to the information released about the project, the segment considered for the test will have a length of four kilometers.
The sea will also be monitored.
One of the most prominent locations of the project is on BR-277, in the descent of the Serra do Mar.
The chosen stretch is between kilometers 33 and 41, in Morretes, in the decreasing direction, totaling eight kilometers.
Since the project is still in the experimental phase, monitoring equipment that is already installed in these locations can be used.
