PL grows and PSDB shrinks in Congress after elections
The 2026 elections redistributed seats in the National Congress. The PL expanded its representation in both chambers and solidified itself as the largest parliamentary force. Traditional parties such as PSD, Union Brasil, and PSDB lost ground, and Cidadania ended up without elected deputies.

The elections of 2026 provoked a dance of the chairs in the Congresso Nacional, with the PL expanding its presence in the Chamber of Deputies and the Federal Senate, while traditional acronyms such as PSD, União Brasil and PSDB saw their benches shrink. Citizenship, for its part, has not elected any deputies for the next legislature, which begins in 2027.
In the Chamber, the PL won 23 new seats and will have 121 deputies. In the Senate, the legend reached 28 senators, becoming the party with the largest presence in the House. The data combines the 54 senators elected in 2026 with the expected occupants of the 27 seats whose terms end in January 2031.
PL leads growth in the Chamber
The advance of the PL in the Chamber of Deputies was the most expressive among all the parties. The bench increased from 98 to 121 deputies, an increase of 23 seats. With this, the acronym consolidates as the House’s greatest strength for the 2027–2031 legislature.
The performance reflects a trend of concentration of votes in few subtitles, a phenomenon that has also been repeated in the Senate. Despite the growth, the PL was not the only one to gain space: Novo and União Brasil won three seats each in the Chamber, and the Network also expanded its representation.
PSD, União Brasil and PSDB lose space
At the other end, União Brasil and PSDB were the acronyms that lost the most space in the Chamber. Both of them shrunk in six chairs. The União Brasil went from 52 to 46 deputies, while the PSDB fell from 17 to 11, registering one of the largest proportional retraction between the parties.
The PSD also suffered a significant decline, but in the Senate. The legend recorded the largest reduction among all the legends in the Casa Alta, with a fall of nine seats. The Senate will have five senators in 2027. The PSB lost three seats, and PP and PSDB had two seats each reduced.
Citizenship will run out of MPs in 2027
The balance of the post-election Citizenship is significant: the party will have no representatives in the House in 2027. The legend, which was already on a shrinking trajectory, was unable to elect any federal deputies for the next legislature.
The result represents a severe blow to the acronym, which completely loses its voice in the House. The lack of representation can impact the party’s ability to influence votes and access resources from the party fund, as well as reduce its national visibility.
Stable countertops and partial renovation
Some parties have kept the size of the bench from one legislature to the next: Podemos, PCdoB, Avante and Mission. However, this does not mean that these parties remained with all the same deputies. There was a partial renewal in all the subtitles.
In Podemos, of the current 27 deputies, 12 were re-elected. In the PCdoB, 7 of the 11 MPs got a new mandate. In the Avante, 4 of the 5 deputies were re-elected, and the only deputy of the Mission also secured another mandate. The numbers show that even on stable countertops, the internal composition has changed.
Senate: PL broadens domain
In the Senate, the PL also expanded the bench and reached 28 senators, becoming the party with the largest presence in the House. The growth was boosted by the election of 54 senators in 2026, added to the expected occupants of the 27 seats whose terms end in January 2031.
In addition to the PL, other parties gained space in the Senate. The most expressive gains after the PL were with Novo and União Brasil, who won three seats each. The Network also expanded its representation, while PT and PDT maintained the same bench size.
Losses concentrated in the Senate
The PSD recorded the largest reduction among all the subtitles in the Senate, with a fall of nine seats. The Senate will have five senators in 2027. The PSB lost three seats, while PP and PSDB had two seats each.
MDB, Republicans, Podemos and Avante also shrank, with the loss of one representative each. Despite the reduction in some acronyms, the redesign of the Senate was less pulverized than that observed in the House, concentrating the biggest gains in a few parties.
What to expect from the new legislature
The new configuration of Congress must alter the balance of forces in the votes on bills, constitutional amendments and economic guidelines. The strengthening of the PL and the weakening of center-right parties can influence the legislative agenda from 2027.
For the reader, the result of the polls defines who will be the representatives responsible for decisions that affect the day to day, such as taxes, health, education and safety. Monitoring the actions of elected parliamentarians is essential to collect campaign promises and to monitor the use of public resources.
