Record cancels debate between Flávio and Lula
The TV Record announced on Friday (9) the cancellation of the debate between Flávio Bolsonaro (PL) and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), scheduled for Sunday (11). The network cited incompatible schedules. This would have been the first meeting of the second round.

TV Record announced on Friday (9) the cancellation of the debate between the candidates for the Presidency of the Republic Flávio Bolsonaro (PL) and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), scheduled for Sunday (11). In a statement, the broadcaster said there was an “incompatibility” of the agendas of the presidential candidates.
"Record informs that, due to the incompatibility of agendas of the candidates for the Presidency of the Republic, Flávio Bolsonaro and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the debate scheduled for next Sunday, October 11, has been cancelled," said Record.
This would be the first debate of the second round of the presidential elections of 2026. Flavio and Lula did not participate in debates during the first round.
Incompatibility of agendas caused cancellation
The broadcaster did not detail what would be the commitments that prevented the meeting from taking place. It only cited the incompatibility of agendas, without specifying whether the unavailability started from one or both candidates.
The cancellation comes just days before the scheduled date, surprising voters who were waiting for the direct confrontation between the two presidential candidates. Record had confirmed the debate for next Sunday, but the change of plans was officially communicated on Friday.
The source did not detail whether there will be a new attempt to reschedule the meeting or whether the broadcaster has given up promoting the debate in this second round.
The first round of debate was expected.
The meeting between Flavio and Lula would be the first of the second round of the presidential elections of 2026. During the first round, the two candidates did not participate in debates, which increased the expectation for this confrontation.
The two have already stated that they intend to discuss their proposals face to face at this stage of the campaign. The statement was given at different times, but both signaled readiness for debate.
With the cancellation, it remains uncertain when and whether there will be a meeting between the candidates before the second round.
Lula had promised “a lot of debate”
In an act in Ceilândia (DF) on Friday, Lula declared that there would be many debates on television and on the internet. “There will be a lot of debate. There will be a lot of debate on television. There will be debate on the internet. Now I'm becoming the king of selfies. Now I'm turning into the netizen. You can prepare,” he said.
Lula’s speech came on the same day as the announcement of the cancellation by Record. There is no information about the candidate’s reaction to the broadcaster’s decision.
Flávio Bolsonaro has not publicly stated its cancellation at the time of this publication.
Other discussions are planned
Despite the cancellation in the Record, other debates are scheduled for the second round. On October 15, without a set time, a debate is planned promoted by SBT, RedeTV! and CNN Brasil.
On October 23, also without a set time, the TV Globo should hold a debate among the candidates. The confirmation of these meetings depends on the agenda of the presidential candidates.
The cancellation of the Record debate does not affect, in principle, the other events planned, but the participation of Flávio and Lula has not yet been officially confirmed.
Impact for the voter
The debate is an important tool for the voter to compare proposals and evaluate the performance of candidates under pressure. With the cancellation, voters miss an opportunity to see the two presidential candidates face-to-face before the second round.
Experts often point out that debates can influence undecided voters, especially in tight elections. The absence of the meeting may increase dependence on other campaign formats, such as rallies, social networks and election propaganda.
For the voters of Ponta Grossa and Campos Gerais, the national political coverage remains relevant, as the presidential dispute directly impacts the public policies that affect the region.
Next steps
With the cancellation of the debate on Record, attention is turned to the meetings scheduled for October 15 and 23. Confirmation of the participation of candidates in these events is still awaited.
The Boca no Trombone portal will continue to follow the agenda of the presidential candidates and will bring updates on upcoming debates. Stay tuned for more information about the election campaign.
